Bridging Knowledge and Impact: Reflections from the 12th EDCTP Forum in Kigali, Rwanda

At the 12th EDCTP Forum held in Kigali, Rwanda, from 15th to 20th June 2025, Ernest Bwogi, a biomedical engineer from Ernest Cook University, presented collaborative research on “Oxygen Concentrator Failures in Resource-Limited Settings.” This study, jointly conducted with the University of Warwick and University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome and funded by EPSRC IAA, examines the technical, environmental, and operational factors affecting the performance of oxygen concentrators essential to healthcare in low-resource environments. Bwogi’s presentation highlighted the significance of publishing peer-reviewed, evidence-based research to inform practical solutions and policy discussions. The forum provided a platform for interdisciplinary engagement and underscored the critical role of emerging professionals in driving innovation for healthcare delivery in underserved regions. Bwogi’s participation demonstrated the impact of global research partnerships in addressing real-world health challenges.

The 9th European Medical and Biological Engineering Conference (EMBEC 2024) took place at the Congress Centre Bernardin in Portorož, Slovenia, from June 9 to 13, 2024. Organized by the Slovenian Society for Medical and Biological Engineering and supported by the IFMBE, this conference showcased traditional and emerging fields in Biomedical Engineering. Highlighted topics included Artificial Intelligence in Health Care, Tissue Engineering, Bioinformatics, Neurotechnology, Electroporation-based Treatments, and Technologies for Medicine and Biology, with an emphasis on education, translational research, and commercialization.

SJTU Warwick Seed Fund Project updates

During the last week of February, a delegation from the University of Warwick, comprising Dr. Davide Piaggio, Mr. Pedro Checa, and Dr. Lyla Latif, traveled to Shanghai, China, for a SJTU-Warwick Joint Seed Fund Project focusing on health data, regulations, and security. They participated in a conference co-hosted by SJTU, Warwick, and Duan Duan Law Firm, offering insights into medical device regulations, sustainability, and digital health. Additionally, they engaged with SJTU students through lectures. This event sets the stage for a forthcoming workshop at Warwick in June, which will involve a delegation from Shanghai.

Great wrap up for the Horizon2020 GATEKEEPER project

The GATEKEEPER project, spanning over four years, aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence-based platform for active and healthy aging. Led by Prof. Leandro Pecchia, Dr. Giuseppe Fico, and Medtronic, the project brought together a diverse consortium of universities, research centers, and companies.
Other members of the ABSPIE Lab were key elements for the successful delivery of the project (Dr Piaggio, Dr Maccaro, Dr Pagliara, Dr Haleem).
Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project achieved fruitful results.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has mentioned the paper "The use of Smart Environments and Robots for Infection Prevention Control: a systematic literature review" by Piaggio et al. (2023) in its latest Global Research and Innovation for Health Emergencies report. The report, which was released on October 10, 2023, highlights the most important and promising research and innovation on infection prevention and control (IPC).

The 16^th Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing (MEDICON) and the 5^th International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering (CMBEBIH) were held from September, 14 until 16, 2023, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The conference was supported and endorsed by IFMBE (Prof Leandro Pecchia is Secretary General) and EAMBES (Prof Leandro Pecchia is Past President) and the ABSPIE lab represented the School of Engineering of the University of Warwick in this international gathering and had a great participation. The event, which was attended by delegates from all over the world, focused on the importance of biomedical engineering and healthcare technology in addressing various healthcare and global challenges and aimed also to enable participants to establish valuable business contacts, exchange ideas and experiences, and develop collaborations in the field of digitalization.

The contributions of the ABSPIE Lab were numerous.

The 1st edition of the Africa Region Biomedical Engineering and Health Technology Conference is being held in Nairobi, Kenya, from the 6th to 8th of September of 2023. This was organised by AMEK Kenya, supported by the IFMBE Africa Biomedical Engineering working group, which also has representatives at Warwick (Dr Davide Piaggio), and by the IFMBE (Prof Leandro Pecchia is Secretary General).
