Fourth-year MEng group awarded the School of Engineering Group Innovation Award

The fourth-year MEng group, supervised by Dr Davide Piaggio, has just been awarded the School of Engineering Group Innovation Award for their project on a device for screening for and monitoring neurodegeneration in the elderly, for which they scored a high first class.

"This project was initially proposed by one of the students, Ben Hoskings, and I decided to embark on the adventure of supervising my first fourth-year project. Since when I met the team, I had no doubt in their skills and I thought that this could really go somewhere. We have now applied for the Eutopia PhD Co-tutelle with VUB, to see whether we can take this forward. Congratulations to all the awardees, it was a pleasure working with you!" Davide Piaggio

Great wrap up for the Horizon2020 GATEKEEPER project

The GATEKEEPER project, spanning over four years, aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence-based platform for active and healthy aging. Led by Prof. Leandro Pecchia, Dr. Giuseppe Fico, and Medtronic, the project brought together a diverse consortium of universities, research centers, and companies.
Other members of the ABSPIE Lab were key elements for the successful delivery of the project (Dr Piaggio, Dr Maccaro, Dr Pagliara, Dr Haleem).
Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project achieved fruitful results.

ABSPIE Lab latest publication: "The use of Smart Environments and Robots for Infection Prevention Control: a systematic literature review"

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is essential to prevent nosocomial infections. The implementation of automation technologies can aid outbreak response. This manuscript aims at investigating the current use and role of robots and smart environments on IPC systems in nosocomial settings. The systematic literature review was performed following the PRISMA statement.
