Celebrating Excellence: Professor Olympia Palikara Wins Supervision Award

We’re thrilled to share that Professor Olympia Palikara, has been awarded the Excellent Supervision Award for Social Sciences at the Warwick Research Celebration 2025.

Professor Palikara’s mentorship blends professional excellence with unwavering personal support. She has guided her students to co-author peer-reviewed publications, present at international conferences and influence policy and practice. Her dedication to growth, resilience and integrity has profoundly shaped her students' academic journeys. Her impact extends beyond academia, inspiring her students to thrive both professionally and personally.

£10k funding granted by British Council

Following a successful bid earlier this academic year, the British Council has granted a second award to colleagues from across SELCS to work with V.N. Karazin Kharkiv University. The £10k funding will be used to support the establishment of a Masters level programme for teachers in Ukraine, and focuses specifically on diversifying education, teaching during war and embracing change in Education. Dr Andy Hind and Prof Gwen van der Velden, who were the Principle Investigators on this award, have also accepted Visiting Professor roles with the same university, to support the project.

Over the course of 2022, a team of Warwick researchers, external artists, and young people from schools in Coventry have been working collaboratively and creatively in response to the global climate crisis and the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This event is in partnership with Sarah Shalgosky (Curator of the Mead Gallery, WAC) and WAC’s Creative Learning team.

We will showcase these three interrelated creative arts education Impact projects, exploring how they have used drama, dance, digital arts, creative writing, and performance poetry as ways of navigating the messy, complex, and often overwhelming topics of climate change and environmental degradation.

Online event: Supporting school transitions for children with special educational needs and disabilities: Resources for children, families and professionals

We are delighted to invite you to our online event on supporting the transition from primary to secondary school for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The event will take place on 11^th of July at 16.00 (UK time).

The aim of the session concerns how we can best support school transitions for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. The session will include talks concerning the experiences of children with SEND and their families during school transitions, including recent research findings about transition from primary to secondary school during the times of COVID-19 pandemic. There will also be the opportunity to share your views concerning evidence-based resources for children, families and professionals

The impact of COVID-19 on children and families with special educational needs and disabilities: What's next?

We are pleased to invite you to our online event on the impact of COVID-19 for children and families with special educational needs and disabilities. The event will take place on Tuesday 24^th May from 4pm.

The session will include talks discussing what research has under-covered so far on the topic, followed by panel discussion concerning next steps on how to best support children and families during the recovery phase from COVID-19. There will also be the opportunity to share your own experiences, helping us to develop evidence-based resources to support children and their families during the recovery phase from COVID-19 and in any related crisis in the future.

New Fair Chance Foundation Research Project on Higher Education in India

The first Fair Chance Foundation-funded project, a five-year study (2017-2021) entitled 'A Fair Chance for Education: Gendered Pathways to Educational Success in Haryana, India' found that young people in rural areas and their families have little to no contact with higher education colleges in their vicinity before making higher education choices. This means that they are making choices about their futures without reliable information, which means that choices are being made on the basis of hearsay – and often reinforce stereotypes associated with gender, class and caste.

Following on from the first project, the Fair Chance Foundation has funded a follow-up project lasting four years which will launch in April 2022. The focus of the second project is to develop the capacity of state higher education institutions in rural and semi-urban areas of India so they can become ‘college knowledge hubs’ in their locations, and empower college principals and staff to become ambassadors for equity in access to higher education.

The research team for the new project is led by Dr Emily Henderson (Education Studies) and Professor Ann Stewart (Law) from the University of Warwick, and Dr Nidhi Sabharwal from the Centre for Policy Research in Higher Education at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration in India.

The call for abstracts for the 9th annual Warwick Education Studies Postgraduate Research Conference is now open

The 9th Education Studies PGR Conference offers a dynamic environment for postgraduate research (PGR) students to showcase and discuss their research. This year's conference keynote programme theme is "Education, Conflict and Displacement". For postgraduates who aim to present at the conference, abstracts should be submitted by Monday 21 March 2022.

This year's conference will take place online over 22-23 April 2022. Attendance at the conference is open to all Postgraduate students and the academic community, and is free. You can register online and find out more on the Conference webpages.
