Lacuna recruiting student to join publicity team!

We currently have a paid opportunity for students to become involved in social media/publicity for the magazine. To apply, read the following paragraph to find out whether you are suitable for the role, and email your CV and covering letter (150 words) to Alice (a.panepinto@warwick.ac.uk) by Monday 13^th February.

The successful candidate will help to maintain and strengthen Lacuna’s social media profile (Facebook and Twitter). They will need to be able to post/tweet in relation to the magazine’s content on a daily basis, and interact with responses. They will also be asked to put together databases of email contacts to whom we can publicise particular editions of the magazine. The successful candidate should therefore have an excellent understanding of social media, and the media/magazine industry, and should have a passion for issues of human rights and injustice. He or she will also need to be able to work as part of a small team and communicate with them promptly and effectively. We are looking for candidates to start as soon as possible, who will be available outside of term time and (preferably) in 2017/2017. We are also keen to hear from PhD candidates in their first and second year.

2017 Death Penalty Programme Internship - deadline 5.12.16

Applications are now open for the summer 2017 edition of the Death Penalty Programme Internship.

The Death Penalty Internship Programme is a unique opportunity for “hands-on” exposure of legal work involving the common law system of the United States, which also encompasses diverse areas of criminal justice, medical law and human rights.

The duration of the internship is approximately two months and interns can expect to: conduct legal research, manage case files, contribute to the briefs filed in state and federal courts, interview witnesses and jurors in appeals cases and attend prison meetings.

The host offices for the 2017 edition include:

Arizona Capital Representation Project, Tucson

Candidates may indicate their preferred choice(s) but these cannot be guaranteed.

These internships are open to all Warwick Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. Preference will be given to candidates who have actively participated in the Death Penalty Project Attorney Support Programme.

Judge Joseph A. Migliozzi Jr, a Norfolk General District Court from Virginia, USA is coming to Warwick to give a talk about current developments relating to the US Death Penalty on Wednesday 19th October at 5pm, Room S 2.12 (Law School).

This talk will be of interest to all students involved and looking to get involved in the Warwick Law School Death Penalty Project.

Paid Student Researcher Opportunity on the 'Politics of Papua Project'

The Politics of Papua Project, supported by the Centre for Human Rights in Practice and the PaIS department at the University of Warwick, is looking for a student researcher to work for 50 hours (paid at standard research rates of approx. £10/hour) on the philosophical and international legal aspects of a proposed independence referendum in the Indonesian-ruled territory of West Papua. The research will centre around the question of whether ethnically-Indonesian migrants in the territory should (ethically and legally) be eligible to vote a proposed referendum on Indonesian rule in West Papua.

The research will last throughout term 1 – with a view to a larger funding application for future research into a hypothetical referendum – and will require a short brief to be written by the end of the period summarising arguments and findings, to be published under the Politics of Papua Project. The researcher should be prepared to contact and discuss the issue with relevant experts on international law and West Papua, and compare the situation with relevant case studies (such as East Timor, South Sudan and Western Sahara).

Candidates will need to display the following:

Understanding of basic international legal principles;
Ability to intelligently navigate through legal argumentation;
Good research skills.

It is preferable that the candidates have the following qualities:

Writing skills;
Communication skills.

We are currently advertising a number of opportunities, listed below. Volunteer (unpaid) opportunities for which we are now recruiting are:

· Coventry Law Centre

CLC is a charity employing solicitors and advice workers providing free legal advice and representation to people whose rights have been breached in our area. Warwick students can get involved in:

Volunteering with the Asylum and Immigration Team

Volunteering with the Astraea and RIPPLE Projects (health and social care)

· Death Penalty Project - Attorney Support Programme

This project assists US attorneys and charities with their on-going work on capital cases in a number of different ways, from case summarisation, to research. The project is student run, and all the work is performed by our dedicated volunteers coordinated by group leaders.

Lacuna is an online magazine published by the Centre that challenges indifference to suffering and promotes human rights. We are currently recruiting for two student roles:

The project is seeking a research assistant to research issues related to the public spending cuts, the extension and development of our electronic database, and communicating with civil society organisations and public authorities who we are working with.

Lacuna magazine: Protest ad the University

This week Lacuna is focusing on protest and the university.

Shirin Rai reports on “an undemocratic attack on one of the foremost universities of India” – Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) – by a government using a discourse of “sedition, nationalism and intolerance” to justify its actions. In ‘Barbarians at the Gate’, she also bears witness to the peaceful protests of staff and students, who came together to oppose this oppression.

In the United Kingdom, Alex Ferguson joined a protest in London against the scrapping of maintenance grants for the poorest students. Reflecting on the protest, he explains how he found himself ‘In the Kettle’, watching as a form of pre-scripted violence plays out to the assembled press corps.

Emma Mason finds a different way of protesting, also in the context of battles against the costs of UK higher education. She explains why she read Ginsberg’s poem ‘Howl’ to the largest rally ever seen on the Warwick University Campus.

In ‘Teaching about Creative Expressions of Resistance in contemporary Cairo’, Sam Holder details his response to the recent revolutions, protests and violence in Egypt.

Looking outward, we welcome Emily Scurrah, from the campaigning organisation 38 Degrees, to both Lacuna and Warwick. In ‘There is Power in a Union,’ Emily shares her optimism about what protestors can achieve when they work together, creatively, to tackle inequality and protect vital services.

Our choice of theme is very much linked to a series of events that will take place at the University of Warwick from 14-17 March. ‘Protest and Performance Week’ has been organised by staff and students at the university and is open to all. It includes panel discussions, comedy, film and theatre, and will feature a number of Lacuna authors. We hope that these two interventions will combine to prompt some interesting discussions about protest and free speech in the university context, and beyond.

Director of Rights Watch UK delivers guest lecture to Warwick students

Guest lecture by Yasmine Ahmed, Rights Watch UK

On Thursday 11^th February, Yasmine Ahmed, director of Rights Watch UK, visited Warwick to deliver a lecture on “Why Human Rights Matter: the UK’s human rights record from Belfast to Basra.”

Drawing on Rights Watch UK’s long experience working on human rights issues in Northern Ireland and elsewhere, Yasmine’s talk explored British counterinsurgency practices and the ways in which practices first encountered in Northern Ireland have been “exported” to operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The recent case of Keyu and others v Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (2015) brought an all-but-forgotten war crime by British troops back into the public spotlight. The decision of the Supreme Court in Keyu was that ECHR jurisdiction did not apply to the actions of British troops in Malaya in 1948. This was undoubtedly a disappointing outcome for the families concerned, but it also stands as an important reminder of the value of the ECHR and of the Human Rights Act in providing oversight and enforcement over military operations today.
