How can universities support school students to write about social justice issues? - Report of a Workshop

On 29 June 2017, The 'Writing Wrongs' workshop brought together academics, writers and a range of other individuals with experience of teaching in schools and/or organising activities for school students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We asked 'How can universities support school students to write about social justice issues?' This report of our workshop summarises our discussions and key findings.

Crucially workshop attendees all agreed that there is significant added value in a national network of universities offering opportunities for school students from disadvantaged backgrounds to develop their skills in writing about social justice issues. The writing Wrongs Project will now take the next steps towards making that happen. Please contact James Harrison (J.Harrison.3@warwick.ac.uk) if you would like to find out more.

'A Passing Fury', Centre co-director's new book, reviewed by The Telegraph

This weekend The Telegraph published a review of 'A Passing Fury', a new book on the British programme of war crimes investigations and trials after WW2 by Andrew Williams, Centre co-director.

Nigel Jones writes: "The abiding impression left by Williams's haunting, sensitive and thoughtful study is ambiguity. Some sort of justice was certainly seen to be done; whether it was really done is more difficult to say."

This book exposes the deeper truth of this controlled scheme of vengeance. Moving from the scripted trial of Göring, Hess and von Ribbentrop, to the makeshift courtrooms where ‘minor’ war criminals (the psychotic SS officers, the brutal guards, the executioners) were prosecuted, A Passing Fury tells the story of the extraordinary enterprise, the investigators, the lawyers and the perpetrators and asks the question: was justice done?

A short piece based on the 'A Passing Fury' was published in Lacuna magazine not long ago. Read the full article here.

On Saturday 23rd April, the Law School's Widening Participation team hosted the prize giving event of the inaugural 'Writing Wrongs' essay competition. Since November, we have been working with 25 pupils from non-traditional backgrounds from eight schools in Coventry and Warwickshire through a series of Saturday workshops in order to improve their research skills and write a 2,500 word essay on the theme of social justice.

The winning essay was written by Gurpreet Dhaliwal from Campion School, Leamington Spa, who wrote an essay entitled ‘Human Trafficking, an underworld crime’. Gurpreet will see her essay published in the Lacuna online magazine and have a paid summer internship with the publication. The runners up were Grace Knowles(Tile Hill Wood School) and Claudi Geraghty (Campion School).

Dr Anil Awesti, Centre for Human Rights in Practice member who leads the Widening Participation projects at the Law School, was interviewed on The politics of the EU debate by the Worldly magazine.

Lacuna magazine is currently focusing on the UK/EU debate with reference to the themes of human rights and social justice.

In What has the EU ever done for us, Lacuna editor-in-chief Prof Andrew Williams sets out some of the questions we hope to explore over the next couple of months in the run up to the referendum. To find out more about the call for submissions, click here.

Lacuna magazine: Lost voices

In today's edition Lacuna magazine attempts to bring to the forefront lost voices across three markedly different political struggles.

In “Two flights: the deportation game” Luke de Noronha interviews Chris, a young man deported to Jamaica who spent his formative years in the UK. Across the UK at any one time there are 3,000 foreign nationals detained in secure centres while their applications to stay in the country are processed. Some are held for months and even years while this takes place.

In “Anatomy of a Queer Arab novel” Saleem Haddad narrows in on the experience of queerness, as a political act and as sexuality, against the backdrop of the momentous protests of the Arab spring. In a frank discussion of his debut novel “Guapa”, Saleem explains the complications implicit in any attempt to unravel and re-humanise the queer Arab from within Middle Eastern societies.

In ‘My Experience of Death Row” Warwick student Victoria Potts provides a personal account of her experience of meeting prisoners facing the death penalty in the USA. Her article describes the process of getting to know prisoners and considering the importance of their crimes in relation to the punishment they received.

We are delighted to invite submissions to a special edition of Lacuna magazine, published by the Centre, on the topic of the UK/EU relationship.

Lacuna will be looking at the theme of the Europe Union over the next few months. With the In/Out Referendum taking place on 23 June, we want to explore the issues that relate to the themes of the Magazine.

You may wish to investigate a particular instance of how the EU operates, to provide commentary, reportage or expert analysis on an EU-connected theme. Or you may wish to review a book, a film, a piece of music, art or theatre relevant to the Union. All forms of writing and visual art will be considered: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, film, animation and photography.

There is no word limit. If you take a look at some of Lacuna’s existing content (follow the links above), you will find submissions of varying lengths which adopt a variety of different styles.

As always we are committed to supporting new writers. This could be students and other people just starting out in their field. We will also support experienced writers who are learning how to write for new audiences; for instance, academics interested in translating their research for a wider audience. Where possible, we will work with prospective authors to help them improve and develop their work.
