City of Culture Project Funding 2019-2020

Call Details

We are excited to announce our final internal funding call for CoC2021 related research projects for the academic year 2019-2020. This call is funded by the University of Warwick’s institutional HEIF (Higher Education Innovation Fund) award and supported by the Connecting Cultures GRP. The call builds upon the work done by the City of Culture partnership, and Coventry City Council’s Cultural strategy. We invite applications of up to £3,000 to provide the groundwork for larger projects. We hope to receive applications from members of all Faculties and interdisciplinary collaboration is strongly encouraged.

In keeping with our CoC2021 research strategy and the City of Culture Trust’s key thematic areas of Collaborative, Caring and Dynamic City we are welcoming applications for projects exploring the role of arts and culture in tackling particular issues (such as loneliness or climate change) and specifically relating to one (or more) of the following broad research areas;

Culture, Rights & Community: cultural memory, identity, value, heritage, social histories, freedom, security, justice & human rights

Cultures of Work, Inclusive Growth & the Creative Economy: digital, cultural & creative industry collaboration. Social value, innovation & entrepreneurship, local & regional sustainable growth, gender

Culture, Health & Well-Being: adult & youth mental health, changing behaviours, supportive technologies, food & health, tackling isolation & loneliness, increasing happiness

Playful City: youthful, playful, creative, innovative, imaginative, mapping, digital humanities uses of data, AR/VR/ immersive technologies, social media analytics

Communities, Resilience & Environmental Sustainability: community engagement & development, social & economic security, environmental humanities & sustainability, green innovation & technologies, energy, urban science, climate change

For information on specific issues for Coventry you may find it useful to refer to the cities Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, which is summarised on the link and/or Coventry Council’s various strategies. You can also find examples of CoC2021 related research projects and inspiration from Warwick colleagues here.

  • The project must align to one or more of the above research areas.
  • The PI will be employed by the University of Warwick and the project will use your academic research.
  • The project will work with an organisation/s in the Coventry area and will have a clear demonstrable link with Coventry. Organisations could be arts, community, health, cultural – we take a very wide view on this.
  • Your project has an intended longer impact beyond academia.
  • We are particularly keen to see proposals involving communities traditionally under-represented whether because of ethnicity, disability, or socio-economic status.
  • The project will NOT have received previous internal funding via the GRPs or Open Call’s jointly funded with Coventry. This fund is to seed NEW projects.
  • These funds are intended as seed funding to help develop external applications and we will expect to see some indication of how this could be developed further within your application. Members of the project team may be asked to present at CoC2021 related events, ample notice will be given.
  • The proposed activity must be complete and all funds fully spent by 31 July 2020.
