Our hybrid planning application was submitted to the local authority (Coventry City Council) following the consultation we carried out on campus and with the local community earlier this year. The application was approved on 15 November. As individual developments start to progress we will share more information with campus and local communities.
The application included requests for planning permission for nine projects on campus, including the new Faculty of Arts and Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research buildings as well as new student residences with up to 1,000 beds. The application also proposed to increase the maximum number of parking spaces on campus from 5,422 to 6,452, in line with Council parking standards to serve the net additional floor space. This will enable the construction of a new multi-storey car park at Gibbet Hill, relieving pressure on Warwick Medical School and the School of Life Sciences and helping to address car parking issues on local residential roads.
Pre application feedback and our response
Whilst public consultation held in May indicated strong support for the new capital projects, concerns were expressed about the traffic generated by additional parking and the potential impacts on local roads.
As part of the application, the University proposed to upgrade its Travel Plan commitments in a new Section 106 Agreement (an agreement with the planning authority to moderate the impact of development). This will include a series of firm proposals, set out the maximum level of car parking, measures to influence travel choices and behaviour change, as well as contributions to off-campus initiatives.
The proposals encouraged sustainable travel through improvements to pedestrian and cycle facilities, shuttle bus services and the trialling of a bus service from Tile Hill station to campus, in addition to the current service to Canley station.
The planning documents are now live on the Coventry City Council Planning Portal. We will keep you updated during the process, and are happy to answer any questions you may have.
