Construction for a new Faculty of Arts Building is underway on the University of Warwick campus. It will be a building for everyone, with a range of mixed teaching and study spaces, lecture facilities, a café and exhibition space for our entire community to enjoy.
We have commissioned Matthew Raw to create a large-scale mural, and he would like your inspiration. He has created an easy-to-do activity pack for people of all ages to complete and share with him. It's made up of some more information about the project and then some simple colour exercises – where there can be no wrong answers!
Read what Matthew had to say:
If you live in Coventry or Warwickshire, I would like your help to inspire the colour choices that will form part of this public piece of art.
The mural will be split into 21 coloured sections – a number selected to celebrate the fact that Coventry will be the UK City of Culture in 2021, as I feel this lasting mural can be an opportunity to remind people for years to come of this significant cultural landmark for the region.
I have been using the work of artists such as Bridget Riley and Terry Frost to help think about the combinations of colours I could use. But when it comes to selecting the colours themselves, I would like to ask the people who will live with the mural and see it regularly: the local community, campus visitors, and the staff and students at Warwick. As you choose colours for the mural, I’d like to understand your relationship to the colour; how it influences and evokes your memories, stories and connections.
I am guided by the principle that ‘murals are for everyone’ so you are all welcome – children, adults, whoever! – to download my short activity pack and get involved. You don’t need to have ever picked up a paintbrush or even a coloured pencil; we’ve made it as simple as possible to do on a laptop, computer and some smartphones.
Download the activity pack below, give it a go, and then send it back to me. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Thank you!
When you have completed the activity pack, make sure to put your name on the final page, save your work and then email it back to Matthew on email@example.com
The 2 November deadline has now passed. If you would still like to share your completed activity pack with Matthew, please do.
If you have any difficulties accessing the activity pack file or completing the colour exercises, get in touch by email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 024 7615 0708.
