Action Tutoring is an education charity that supports disadvantaged young people to achieve meaningful qualifications on leaving primary and secondary school. Our support is needed more now than ever before to help make up for the education lost over the pandemic. We are an approved provider for the National Tutoring Programme (NTP); funded as part of the government’s £1 billion coronavirus catch-up package to provide additional support to schools to help disadvantaged pupils whose education has been most affected by school closures.
We are looking for volunteers to support disadvantaged primary and secondary school pupils with English and Maths tutoring to help them reach their potential.
You will work with one or two pupils for an hour a week across the course of a school term; either before, during or after the school day. Sessions will take place online at the same time each week; we also have one-off volunteering opportunities.
Volunteering is carried out online from home
1 hour a week in school term time for a minimum of 8-10 weeks, plus 10-20 minutes of preparation time each week is recommended (all tutoring resources are provided).
We look for volunteers who have or are studying for a degree (in any subject) and have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent qualifications) in the subject they wish to tutor. English or maths-related A Level subjects are also considered, such as: history, politics or sociology (for English tutors) and physics, chemistry and economics (for maths tutors).
As a tutor, you need to have good communication skills and be a fluent English speaker. You’ll need to be willing to make your sessions engaging and interactive.
If your qualifications do not match these requirements, we would still encourage you to apply. Once we review your answers we may then arrange a call with you to find out more.
No prior experience necessary. You will be given a two-hour initial training session; plus an additional hour’s training on our online platform and resources before starting a programme. You will also have the support of the Action Tutoring staff, including a Programme Coordinator, who will attend tutoring sessions.
