Philosophy and Literature Taster

Pre University Philosophy and Literature Taster
Taught by Warwick staff, our Philosophy and Literature tasters are two days long and packed with teaching activities designed to enhance your skills as a critical and imaginative thinker.

There will also be plenty of opportunities to work alongside your peers and to network and socialise in an informal environment. Courses will introduce you to exciting concepts in your chosen discipline, opening your mind to new ideas and will reflect the highest standards of Warwick learning.

lecture_talk.jpgOne of the interesting things about people is that they have a long history of trying to understand their lives. We do not seem to be content simply to live; we want to understand how we fit into reality and how we can live good lives.

Philosophy and literature are central to this long history: they are traditions that offer importantly different routes into understanding who we are and what can make life worth living. They have distinctive ways of helping us to question things we can take for granted – that our five senses are reliable sources of evidence, that time flows from past to present to future, that we can know how others think and feel, that we are moved most powerfully by self-interest, that people are more ethically significant than animals. And so on – philosophy and literature do not run out of hard questions.

This taster course will introduce you to substantial questions addressed by philosophical and literary works and to some methods of inquiry central to these fields. What capacities and qualities are important – emotion, reason, imagination, clarity, ambiguity, creativity, universality? Our discussions will include some questioning of how well these two traditions ‘get along’. Do they really cooperate in the quest for understanding? Do they pull against each other? Why, as it seems, do we need them both?

The course will give you an opportunity to see what it is like to study philosophy and literature at University-level. This will be relevant to university study of the two subjects independently as well, but our focus will be on linking the subjects.
