STEM Connect Feedback - Spring Survey

The STEM Grand Challenge is now referred to as the STEM Connect programme: https://warwick.ac.uk/about/strategy/challenges/stemgc.

Growth in STEM research and teaching is a key priority in the University Strategy ‘Excellence with Purpose’ to 2030. To deliver that goal, the STEM Connect Programme has been established to consider how best to grow and strengthen our existing world-class STEM research and education activities, and to consider the key enablers of innovation and scientific discovery in a changing world.

We are keen to continually assess your thoughts and awareness of the STEM Connect programme, so we appreciate you taking 2 minutes to complete this short survey. https://forms.office.com/e/ttPHbKMEcHLink opens in a new window.

We will use responses to inform how we can improve our reach, share our knowledge, and ensure you; our Warwick community are kept engaged and informed of the programme going forward.

Please submit your response by Tuesday 2nd April 2024.

The STEM Grand Challenge has a new name: the STEM Connect programme.

The Grand Challenges will now be known as the STEM Connect programme and the Social Sciences Connect programme.

The new names reflect how the programmes will better connect our people, bringing our communities together.

You will start to see the new name appearing in the coming weeks.

Professor Mark Williams is new Academic Director for STEM Grand Challenge

Professor Mark Williams, who is the Deputy Chair of Faculty (Research) for Science, Engineering and Medicine, is taking over as Academic Director for Warwick’s STEM Grand Challenge, for a period of six months.

Mark has been a key player within WMG for the last two decades, and has most recently worked as head of the Metrology and Visualisation research group. He has delivered multiple large-scale research and development projects in partnership with industry and is a leader in the delivery of interdisciplinary research. With over 20 years’ experience working in the automotive, aerospace, defence and healthcare sectors, he is also a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Mark takes over with immediate effect from Professor Mike Caine. Mike will leave his role as STEM Grand Challenge Programme Director at the end of July, to take up a new role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Engagement and Innovation) at Aston University. He will work with Mark over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.

The STEM Grand Challenge (STEM GC) is a significant investment to improve Warwick’s teaching, learning and research capabilities for science and engineering.

Over the next 10 years, new buildings designed for excellent teaching, collaboration and top-level research will be built for the benefit of students, staff and our communities.

Commenting on his appointment, Mark said:

“I’m thrilled to be taking on this role and supporting the STEM Grand Challenge! It feels like a great time to be joining the team as things are really beginning to take shape.

“I’m looking forward to leading this vital programme and being a key part of Warwick’s continued commitment to science and engineering.”

Professor Stuart Croft, Warwick’s Vice-Chancellor, added:

“Mark is moving into this role at an exciting time for the STEM Grand Challenge programme. I look forward to working with him as we continue our ambitious plans together.

“Our vision is to grow and strengthen our world-class research and education through state-of-the-art facilities where innovation and groundbreaking science will flourish, and Mark’s skillset lends itself brilliantly to this ethos.”

“I’d also like to thank Mike for his focus and drive in delivering a successful business case for the STEM Grand Challenge and in developing the programme during his time at Warwick.”
