Banting Sze

Banting Sze
Banting Sze (MSc Information Technology for Manufacture 1989-90) is the Chairman and CEO of Freetech Technology Limited, a company he created in Hong Kong in 1993. Freetech specialises in asphalt road recycling and preservation. It now owns over 60 patented technologies and employs 600 staff located in 10 offices, a factory, a research centre and servicing centres in China.

When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I have always wanted to run my own business since young. Many of my family members have their own trading or manufacturing companies. As a child I was already very used to listening to business “stories” at family gatherings, both happy and sad ones. I have never thought about joining any family business though: I am always very independent and the only idea I like is to start up a company of my own.
What was the best careers advice you were given?
I like very much the concept of “training your own teachers”. It is a good concept in not only careers, but also in living. The essence is to make people around me to want to share with me their knowledge and experience. As a result, throughout life I have the benefit of many teachers from whom I can continue to acquire valuable learning. As time is so preciously limited, it is so more efficient to learn from a teacher, especially a good teacher, than to do self-learning.
Describe yourself in three words
What are the most challenging parts of your job?
My company specializes in road recycling and preservation, providing more environmentally-friendly solutions for road building and maintenance. Road projects however involve many stakeholders. Even though everyone knows the importance of environment preservation, many are reluctant to agree to changes for their own interests. The most challenging parts of my work therefore include persuading government officials and other customers to see and appreciate how changing to a new technology will benefit more the future of our planet.
What have you done that you are most proud of?
That together with my research team, we have developed the now world-leading technology in road recycling.
What drives you?
It all starts with a sense of responsibility: I am committed to the responsibilities I have taken up. And any pressure that arises from the commitments in turn becomes my motivation.
What single thing would most improve the quality of your life?
The environmental awareness level among the public is higher than now.
What three objects would you take with you to a desert island?
  • My favourite book (by Mou Zongsan, a Chinese philosopher)
  • A fishing rod
  • A weapon

Then I’ll have spiritual food, physical food and a tool: all I need for survival!

Where do you hope to be in 10 years’ time?
I shall have one listed company each in Hong Kong and mainland China, and for both of which I do not need to run their day-to-day operations.
How would you like to be remembered?
A good teacher.
What are your favourite memories of your university years at Warwick?
I have many fond memories of my time at Warwick. I remember lying on the campus green grass reading a book under the sun until it gets dark and I find myself gazing at the stars across the clear sky. I also enjoy recalling the time that I spent with my Warwick friends: At sports, in class, or even just shopping in the supermarket!
Do you have any advice for new graduates and undergraduates?
In order to achieve good results, one must be prepared to endure hardship and overcome difficulties.
Anything else you would like to add?

I would like very much to re-connect to my long-lost Warwick friends! Friends, please email me at As I have a hectic work schedule I may not check my emails very regularly. Please also copy your message to my secretary
