This year Warwick Arts Centre collaborated with Theatre Rites, a renowned children’s theatre company to create Bank On It, a site-specific, interactive, promenade performance piece for children aged 5+. Co-funded by Warwick Arts Centre, the Barbican and Warwick's Economics Department the company turned a disused Coventry building into a magical, interactive bank, allowing children to think actively about spending and saving, world resources, and what is of most value and importance.
The show had its roots in Warwick Arts Centre’s This_Is_Tomorrow project, a unique commissioning programme where academics from departments across the University of Warwick are introduced to artists to kickstart new collaborations on a wide range of topics. After meeting academics from Economics, Theatre Rites artistic director Sue Buckmaster came up with an idea which was then co-commissioned by both Warwick Arts Centre and the Economics Department of the University of Warwick. Bank On It made its debut in London over the summer to critical acclaim, enchanting the constant stream of children that visited the bank.
Thank you for a great afternoon. Kai (4) and Tara (8) loved it and chatted about it lots afterwards. The finale was so beautiful and the image has stayed with me.
Performers were excellent and content was superb my daughter wanted it to be longer she enjoyed it so much. It needs promoting in schools it’s the best educational thing we've been to.
Bank on It was brilliant . . . . .such a different production. It was good for the children to feel part of it! Thank you.
