Enabling Diversity in Access to Higher Education and at Work

18 June 2021, 12.30pm - 1.30pm (UK TIME)


This online webinar will provide an opportunity to gain valuable insights from members of our alumni community and Warwick’s Director of Social Inclusion, on how individuals and organisations can enable diversity in higher education and the workplace.

During the webinar, Elham Fardad (MBA 1999-2004, Founder and CEO of the charity Migrant Leaders, Co-Founder and CEO of ID Inclusion) will share insights from her experiences assisting young people from diverse backgrounds to overcome barriers in accessing higher education, through the support of mentoring programmes.

Justin Onuekwusi (BSc Economics 2000-2003, Head of Retail Multi-Asset Funds, Legal & General Investment Management) will speak from his experience in supporting people to achieve their potential at work, with a focus on creating more black senior leaders in the asset management industry. Whilst Kulbir Shergill, Director of Social Inclusion will share some of Warwick’s initiatives to empower Warwick employees to succeed.

Rachel is responsible for the professional services of the University under the direction of the Vice-Chancellor. She has a wealth of experience from her roles as shadow CEO of the UK Government’s Institute for Apprenticeships and Director General in the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

In 2012, she was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath and named in The Times 100 “Most Influential Lawyers”. In 2016, she was named one of the FTSE 100 “Women to Watch”.

Elham’s professional career spans 25 years in senior leadership roles in blue chip multinationals including GE, News Corp and Ernst & Young, where she has advised clients on their most challenging operational problems. Elham advises leadership teams on strategy, operations and talent. She is a member of multiple Advisory Boards. Finalist in awards for her work on Migrant Leaders, including Charity Times Charity of the Year and the IoD Director of the Year.



Justin OnuekwusiJustin Onuekwusi

Head of Retail Multi-Asset Funds, Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM)

Justin is Head of Retail Multi-Asset Funds at LGIM and a member of the Asset Allocation team which manages over £50 billion for pension schemes and savers throughout the world. He co-chairs the Legal & General Inclusion Team (LEGIT). Externally, Justin is an adviser to the board of City Hive Ltd, which focuses on driving diversity initiatives throughout the asset management industry. In addition, he sits on the ethnicity workstream of the industry-wide Diversity Project and is a co-founder of the movement #talkaboutblack, which focuses on creating more black senior leaders in the asset management industry and beyond as well as addressing the taboo that surrounds conversations about ethnicity. Last year, Justin was awarded the honour of the Freedom of the City of London, due to his work within diversity and inclusion.

Director of Social Inclusion, University of Warwick

Kulbir is currently Director for Social Inclusion at The University of Warwick where she is leading the development and implementation of an ambitious 10-year strategy contributing to the universities ambitions to become a world-class organisation. An accomplished diversity and social inclusion consultant, adviser and leader for over 20 years Kulbir brings cross-sector experience and learning from complex, fast-moving and challenging commercial firms, local and central government and not for profit organisations. She has worked at board level for KPMG, Genesis Group, NACRO and The Home Office.
