Traditionally the run up to Christmas has been considered 'downtime' for recruiting staff with everyone's minds on the festivities. Most people assume that the New Year brings in a wave of new jobseekers who have resolved to make a fresh start and that January is the best time to start advertising vacancies. However, new research from jobs.ac.uk shows that in fact December may well be the best time to start advertising those new roles.
Carl Freelove of jobs.ac.uk said: " “Last December we had over 450,000 unique visitors to our jobs site, 35% of which were brand new users. We even had almost 35,000 visitors between Christmas and New Year proving that, whilst people are still enjoying the festive season, they are also keeping an eye on the job opportunities available and are keen not to miss out.
"In a way, December is the best time to recruit as it’s often easier for jobseekers to take time off to attend interviews than busier times in the working year. It’s quite clear from our study that the ‘new year, new career’ mindset begins well in advance of January and there are a lot of jobseekers actively looking for jobs long before the Christmas holidays.
"Vacant positions in January could mean a slow start to the New Year but advertising those jobs now and employing new staff could get 2012 off to a flying start!”.
