Project Overview:

Enchanted Community was a collaborative art project which took place in Leamington and Coventry, May – July, 2017.

The project invited participants to come and think about paintings and our local community in new ways. How do you experience wonder, peace and enchantment in your everyday life and community? Do you see sparkle in leaves, raindrops or shadows?

The Enchanted Community project comprised a series of events inspired by the themes of art, enchantment and community and the paintings of Frederick Cayley Robinson. During workshops and outreach sessions in schools, participants contributed towards collaborative artworks. The events brought members of the public, school children and local students in touch with Warwick University through accessible scholarship communicated through fun, hands-on arts and crafts activities. Events were run by Dr. Alice Eden, University of Warwick, and local artist Holly Dawes.

We welcomed participants to come and view the results of the collaborative art project in the Central Library, Coventry in July, 2017. Friends and family were also welcome and could provide feedback comments.

About the Organiser:

Dr. Alice Eden
I am an early career academic who is passionate about art and community, both art education and the process of making collaborative art. In the process of making artworks, anyone may experience tangible and intangible effects related to the spiritual, emotional, self-esteem and empowerment, community-building and efforts towards peace.

My book Spirituality and Feminism in Modern British Art and Culture will be published by Routledge/Taylor & Francis, New York, 2019. The book features a detailed chapter on Frederick Cayley Robinson (born 1862- died 1927), the British artist working in the 1900s whose artworks inspired this project. Some of Cayley Robinson's artworks may be seen at Leamington Spa Art Gallery and the Tate Gallery, London.

Find out more about me, my research, activities and publications here.

I ran the project as an Early Career Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/ias/fellows/ecf/

My research interests range from Edwardian artists and visual culture to histories of spirituality, the occult, new social movements, UK and US feminisms in the twentieth century.

You can read my article 'Art, Scholarship, Community: Experiences of Viewing' here. The article discussed an exhibition in Coventry, 2016 which was the result of a collaboration between the University of Warwick and local community partners. The article explores ideas of spirituality, community and art drawn from my research on British Victorian and Edwardian artists.
