Thesis: Cosimo I de' Medici and the Industry of Art

Supervisor: Prof Lorenzo Pericolo

Background:

I am a PhD student in the History of Art department at the University of Warwick, with a MSt. in History of Art and Visual Culture from the University of Oxford (2014) and a BA in Classics and Art History from the University of Nottingham (2013). With experience providing research assistance on public engagement projects, producing video content for universities and teaching undergraduates, my passion for my work finds its root in the communication of knowledge, and the facilitation of new ideas and innovation.

Research:

My doctoral research examines the socio-political strategies associated with the development of Florence’s tapestry industry in the mid-16th century, in an attempt to further our understanding of Duke Cosimo I de Medici’s role in exacting its emergence. While the existing scholarship contains a number of excellent studies on Cosimo as a patron and collector of art, this project constitutes the first sustained analysis of his weaving workshops' impact on the wider reestablishment of Florence as a centre of culture.
