The undergraduate second-year option module offers an introduction to the history of the Caribbean. It will introduce students to several important themes in Caribbean history, including slavery, emancipation and race relations. Some attention will be devoted to slave resistance and to the campaign to abolish slavery. Lectures and seminars will also investigate the aftermath of emancipation, including the development of Rastafarianism. The module will accomplish these objectives through readings, primarily in history but also encompassing sociology and anthropology.
