This undergraduate second-year option module is designed to help students understand the origins of the highly-mediated and networked world in which they live, by examining its invention and diffusion within the United States over a fifty-year period beginning in c.1880. It also will enable students to understand the cultural life of the US during the period of rapid industrialization, urbanization, and immigration, and it will provide them with a critical understanding of the role of inventions in society. The module complements and deepens treatment of the evolution of mass culture provided in History and CAS first-year core modules.
