Assessment of the module for all students is 50% for coursework submitted during the module and 50% for a 2-hour exam in the May/June session of examinations.
The exam will be divided into two parts: students will be required
- to identify and comment on two pieces of primary evidence which you will have met during the course of the module, including at least one image (out of a choice of six, which may include texts, plans or photographs)
- to write two essays (from a choice of at least six titles).
It should be noted that students should not expect a close overlap between the titles of assessed essays and those in the exam though they should also be aware that the thoughtful student may well be able to exploit for somewhat different purposes the knowledge and material gained in connection with their essays.
The examination will test the whole of the syllabus, and assumes that students have consolidated their work in lectures and seminars with extra reading (as indicated on lecture bibliographies).
Coursework is divided as follows (together worth 50% of the module):
10 minute assessed presentation on a monument discussed during the Term (10%) plus a 1,500 word report, uploaded to Tabula (15%)
Assessed essay, 2,500-300 words.
All written work must be provided with proper bibliographic references, and be presented legibly; use of a word processor is encouraged. Spelling and grammar must be of an acceptable standard. For general advice on assessment criteria see the Departmental Handbook.
On submission of all assessed work, students are required to sign a statement to the effect that the submission represents their own work, with no unacknowledged or disguised quotations, passages, or opinions taken from secondary sources. This represents a promise that the essay does not contain plagiarism, which is a serious offence that will be heavily penalized, usually by a mark of zero. The consequences of a student being penalized for plagiarism means that he or she will find it difficult to achieve more than a third-class mark for the course as a whole.
