The first part of the module (term 1) deals mainly with theories and modelling, and students will be given plenty of opportunity to debate these in the discussions / seminars planned for that term. The second term focuses more on the material evidence. All of these sessions will take as their starting point a particular scholarly theory or key document. Towards the end of the module there are a number of geographical themes and case studies, dealing with provinces, frontier zones and regions outside the empire. The module concludes with a consideration of whether the empire can be said to have experienced ‘globalisation’ and the changes that took place with the collapse of the western empire.
