Part-time study

If you wish to study part-time, you should indicate this on your application. If during the course of your studies you wish to move to part-time status, you should seek the advice of your personal tutor or the relevant MA Convenor.

Planning your study
Part-time students need to plan their studies carefully, particularly MAEL students taking one of the named pathways. Bear in mind that modules on offer in the first year of study may not be repeated in the following year.

MAEL

In their first year, part-time MAEL students normally take the Foundation Module and two additional modules, one in the autumn and the other in the spring. In their second, they take two further modules, or write a dissertation. Note that if you wish to write a dissertation, you will need to apply for permission in your first year, and also attend the dissertation proposal workshops in your first year.

Part-time MAEL students must hand in their Critical Theory essay at the same time as full-time students. This is because Critical Theory is part of the Foundation Module, and is foundational for subsequent work. For all other modules, part-time students have different deadlines that take into account their status. It is students’ responsibility to note and meet these deadlines. Part-time students must submit their Term 1 option module essay either on Monday of week 6, term 2 or Monday week 5, term 3. Their Term 2 option module essay must be submitted by 1st September.

MALTS

In their first year, part-time MALTS students normally take the Core Theory module EN964 in the autumn, the Core Workshop module (this will be either EN9A5 or EN971, depending on the year) in the spring, and the compulsory Introduction to Research Methods session in the autumn. Students may also choose to take a third module (either the optional core module or an elective) in the first year, if their outside commitments allow. It is advisable to take three out of the four MALTS modules in the first year if at all possible so as to allow enough time for dissertation writing in the second year. In their second year, students will normally take the final of their four modules (either the optional core module or an elective) and write their dissertation.
