Fire Alarms

The FAB fire alarm is tested on a Tuesday morning between 8.30am and 9am. If the fire alarms sound at any other time or continue to ring on a Tuesday morning for more than a brief period, then it is either a fire drill or an actual fire. All occupants of the building must exit the building immediately, using the stairs and not the lift, and move away from the building and the courtyard. The usual location to move to is in front of the e-Sport Centre (the old sports centre building).

A Fire Safety Training Moodle course is available and must be completed by all staff and students when they first join the University, and then refreshed at least every three years.

First Aid

If you need a first aider you can contact one close to you, either in the same building or one close by, by using the list of Qualified First Aid Staff by Building/Location. In addition, all Community Safety (formerly Security) staff are trained First Aiders and can be contacted on extension 22222 or externally at 02476522222.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

There are also a number of AEDs around campus. Whilst our first aiders are all trained in the use of AEDs, there is no need for specific training. Anyone can use an AED and there is no risk of hurting someone should an AED need to be used by someone who has not been trained.

Emergency Services

If there is a need for the Emergency Services (medical, police, or fire), please contact Community Safety (formerly Security) on extension 22083 or externally at 02476522083. If you dial 999 using a University phone handset it will automatically be directed to Community Safety who will talk you through the issue and call the Emergency Services on your behalf. It is vital that calls to Emergency Services go through Community Safety so that they can direct them around campus to avoid any delays. Community Safety will usually send an officer across to assist whilst waiting for Emergency Services.
