Student Wellbeing
Levels of reported mental illness, mental distress, and low wellbeing among students in the UK HE sector are increasing, and are high relative to other sections of the population. Some of this increase may not be due to more students in need, but more willingness from students to self-report issues. As a Department we are in a position where we can actively listen, accept, and improve the conditions of our students. Any improvement in a student's wellbeing can also improve their academic achievement and satisfaction.
We can support our students by:
- Being willing and available to listen to students with issues, no matter how trivial you might feel they are
- Listening without judging - each student is a different person with different needs, abilities and limits
- Reassuring the student and provide factual information where you can or directions where you cannot
- Directing students towards professional help - Student Wellbeing and the mental health team are available on campus
- Directing students towards self-help and support networks
