Autumn term

Module Leader: Ed Gallafent

Seminar Tutors: Ed Gallafent, Paul Cuff, James Taylor

In the Autumn term we will explore what is commonly known as ‘Classical Hollywood Cinema’, looking at films produced from the end of the 1920s to the end of the 1940s. We will be focusing primarily on the films themselves, as well as setting them in their industrial and historical contexts and asking how we interpret their meanings through the evidence on screen in front of us. We will be talking about Hollywood as a cinema of conventions and motifs, directorial style vs. ‘group style’, genres and generic expectations, the figure of the goal-oriented protagonist, representations of gender, and the importance and function of stars.
