Dr Mathew Thomson is Senior Lecturer in the Department of History and Acting Director for the Centre for the History of Medicine. He has published on the history of mental deficiency and mental health care in Britain during the first half of the twentieth century, including The Problem of Mental Deficiency: Eugenics, Democracy and Social Policy in Britain, 1870-1959 (1998). He is currently working on a social and cultural history of the category of the psychological in twentieth-century Britain.
