Veterans: A Brief Literary History

England began systematically to look after her war veterans in 1593. In 2011, the Armed Forces Covenant recognised the UK’s obligations to those who have fought on the nation’s behalf and an annual £10 million was allocated in perpetuity to meet the government’s Covenant commitments. (The British defence budget for 2016-17 was £35.1 billion.) In poetry, fiction and drama, treatment of veterans has both coincided with and critiqued the official attitude of the state. This keynote will take a tour of the veteran in English literature across four centuries, illuminating the ongoing fascination with this central figure in national life.
