ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership studentships competition is now open!

The Midlands Graduate School open competition for studentships commencing in October 2020 is now open! Deadline for applications is Wednesday 22nd January 2020. Please note that there are several elements to the application process and applicants should allow plenty of time to assemble all the information required.

The Midlands Graduate School DTP makes an annual award of a large number of studentships to outstanding applicants across the Social Sciences. The studentships are linked to disciplinary and inter-disciplinary training pathways, and some have a built-in element of collaboration.

Recruitment: Two Research Fellows for the project "What’s at Stake in the Fake? Indian Pharmaceuticals, African Markets and Global Health"

The Warwick University History Department seeks to appoint two full-time Research Fellows for the fixed-term period of thirty-six months to conduct research as part of the Wellcome Trust funded project, What’s at Stake in the Fake? Indian Pharmaceuticals, African Markets and Global Health.

The Warwick University History Department is one of the largest history departments in the UK, with teaching and research notable for its disciplinary range and geographical scope. The Department is comprised of 53 academic staff, 17 postdoctoral staff, 10 support staff, ~1,000 undergraduate students, and ~100 postgraduate students. The Department has a strong international reputation and high rankings in university guides and surveys, and was ranked first in the UK in the last Research Excellence Framework (REF) for the proportion of world-leading research activity (4*) in the Department. The Department is committed to maintaining and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion amongst its staff and student community.

You will have a first degree or equivalent, a PhD in History, Anthropology or a related field, and experience of conducting archival, oral history and/or ethnographic research. Preference will be given to candidates with the ability to conduct research in Gujarati and/or Kiswahili.

If you have not yet been awarded your PhD but are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant on level 5 of the University grade structure (£29,515). Upon successful award of your PhD and evidence of this fact, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£30,395 pa).

Recruitment: History Department Postgraduate and Research Coordinator

The successful candidate will possess relevant experience of working in an office environment within the HE sector, excellent interpersonal skills, strong organisational and planning skills, and the ability to use initiative and to work quickly and accurately under pressure to cope with competing priorities.

Recruitment: Research Fellow for the project "What’s at Stake in the Fake? Indian Pharmaceuticals, African Markets and Global Health"

Indian Pharmaceuticals, African Markets and Global Health, under the direction of Dr Sarah Hodges.

You will have a first degree or equivalent, a PhD in history or a related field, and experience of conducting archival research. Preference may be given to candidates with familiarity with WHO archives or experience in the anthropology of pharmaceuticals.

Recruitment: Undergraduate Coordinator

The Department of History seeks to appoint a full-time Undergraduate Coordinator to join the Department’s student support team on a permanent contract.

You will be responsible for assisting with the management, coordination, and support of undergraduate study in the Department of History, particularly in relation to Mitigation and Special Exam Arrangements. To include direct support to the Academic Administrator and the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and providing assistance to other relevant academic officers.

You will possess relevant experience of working in an office environment within the HE sector, and of dealing with people at various academic and administrative levels. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships, respect confidentiality and an ability to deal with staff and students in a sensitive, professional manner. You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong organisational and planning skills, and the ability to use initiative and to work quickly and accurately under pressure to cope with competing priorities. Recruitment: Teaching Fellow in the History of Social and Political Ideas 1650-1850

The Department of History seeks to appoint a fixed-term ten-month full-time Teaching Fellow in the History of Social and Political Ideas 1650-1850. You will convene, taking lectures and seminars, the second-year undergraduate module ‘Individual, Polis and Society: Philosophical Reflections in History’, and you will take seminars on the first-year undergraduate modules ‘Historian’s Toolkit’ and ‘The Enlightenment’, for a total of eight seminar groups of approximately fifteen students per group. The modules ‘Individual, Polis and Society: Philosophical Reflections in History’ and ‘The Enlightenment’ involve work on both primary texts and changes in society and politics during the period. You will also teach occasional lectures for other undergraduate modules as required by the Head of Department and as appropriate to subject knowledge.

You will undertake lecturing, seminar teaching, essay tutorials, office hours, marking of undergraduate work, exam invigilation, and monitoring of student attendance in accordance with the Department’s quality assurance practices. You will also act as personal tutor to an assigned group of undergraduate students, providing pastoral support and guidance during the academic year. You will be actively engaged in research in the history of ideas in the period, or a comparable field.

You will possess experience in undergraduate teaching and subject specialism appropriate for research-led teaching in the History of Social and Political Ideas 1650-1850. You should also possess a PhD (or equivalent) in History.

The Department of History seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in the History of Medicine. You will conduct research in the history of medicine, and be prepared to work in collaboration with colleagues within the Centre for the History of Medicine, the History Department, and across the University. You will be expected to build research networks in your specialism beyond the University.

You will have a proven record of achievement in research, with clear potential for/or demonstrated excellence in publication in an area or areas of the history of medicine. You will have undergraduate teaching experience, and experience of/or the potential to engage in postgraduate teaching. You will have knowledge of applying for funding, and the potential to participate in collaborative grant initiatives and management. You will be expected to participate as appropriate in the administration of the History Department.

While we encourage applications across all time periods and subject areas, we are particularly keen to attract candidates with a strong research and publication record in the history of medicine in Britain or British Empire after c.1800, as well as work that crosses interdisciplinary boundaries, to include history of science and technology, anthropology, and geography.

You will initially be funded by the Wellcome Trust University Award scheme. Please note that the appointment is a two-stage process, with the University of Warwick nominating the preferred candidate for consideration by the Wellcome Trust for a University Award. This candidate, on nomination to the Wellcome Trust, will be required to produce a funding application, outlining a major research project resulting in high quality outputs to be conducted within the University Award period. Please note that no appointment will be made without a successful application for a Wellcome Trust University Award.

You will initially be appointed as a Senior Research Fellow for the first three years, and then transfer to the permanent post of Assistant Professor at the start of your fourth year.
