Joseph Nyes definition of power in his recent book The Future of Poweris similar to the often cited one by Robert Dahl: that power is the ability of A to make B do what it would otherwise not do

1)    Through my readings, I have concluded that Historically for ‘A to make B do what it would otherwise not do’, it needs to be global economic, military and cultural leaders. The dissertation will discuss the extent to which china matches these criteria. I will argue that China will in fact be the next global super power by the year 2030. The main driver behind this is the Belt Road Initiative, allowing China to maximize its benefits on global trade ‘debt trap diplomacy’. China military expansion, south China sea , Chinese exporting their soft power, in education (foreign students given scholarships to study in china,  scientific discovery and patents,)

2)    I will structure my dissertation by comparing china to historic superpowers and discuss to what extent China is following the formula of becoming a super power.  The main super powers I will compare China with is the UK and USA, the two most recent ones.

3)    Using a range of sources, books such as civilization, and why the west rules for now, pomeranz, as well as articles from publications such as the economists and for the data using reports from think thanks such as Chatham house and the Brookings institute as well as US government data. I have also attended several lectures on China at Chatham House and LSE.
