Module Name: Multilingualism in Italy and in Italian Communities Abroad
Module Coordinator: TBC
Not Running 2018-19
Module Credits: 15

Module Description

This module will introduce you to multilingualism in the Italian peninsula and in Italian-speaking communities located beyond the national borders. By exploring a range of key sociolinguistic issues, students will discover the rich linguistic repertoires present throughout Italy, with a specific focus on linguistic minorities and Italy’s ‘hidden multilingualism’. The module will also deal with Italian in migration settings, looking at multilingual practices and linguistic behaviours in various parts of the world where Italian comes into contact with other languages.

In addition, you will acquire a set of research skills in relation to language in society. By conducting a small research project involving Italian speakers, you will reflect on the planning and methods involved in the collection and analysis of sociolinguistic data. No previous knowledge of linguistics is required and the module will build upon your previous direct experiences with the Italian language during the year abroad. Lectures are followed by separate interactive seminars which will consolidate students’ understanding of multilingualism and research methods.

Assessment

One 2000-2500 word essay (50%), plus an individual research project with a 1500 word report and commentary (40%) and a 7-8 minute presentation in Italian on the project (10%).
