Year 9 Schools Event - Language Learners as Peacemakers

This event is part of the outreach and widening participation work delivered to local schools by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. We are collaborating on this occasion with Coventry Cathedral to design an event to mark the 80thanniversary since the end of World War Two and Warwick’s 60thbirthday. The event will take place in the beautiful surroundings of Coventry Cathedral and will allow pupils to:
- explore with us how language learning can promote intercultural awareness, empathy and understanding between nations
- be inspired by the Cathedral surroundings to create a piece of artwork
The event will challenge pupils in Year 9 to
- use their language skills (content will be accessible in French, Spanish and German)
- use their teamwork and presentation skills
- use their creativity and explore links between curriculum subjects
Our SMLC staff team will be supported by our wonderful team of SMLC student ambassadors.
Who is it for?
Local Coventry and Warwickshire schools and those who are part of our Routes into Languages network can apply to attend. We would recommend schools bring pupils in Year 9 who study French, Spanish or German and have an interest in pursuing languages or who may need just a little push to encourage them to choose them at GCSE! Also pupils who are considering taking History, Art or RE at GCSE as the content will cover all these curriculum areas. It would also be an ideal enrichment opportunity for students on pupil premium registers. We will prioritise state schools who meet our widening participation criteria (higher than average % of pupils on free school meals and/or school postcode in lower polar quintile area), then state schools in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. After this, allocation of places will be on a first come first served basis.
Logistics
The event will take place on Thursday 23 October 10-3pm in Coventry Cathedral. We have space for 6 schools to attend, with each bringing 10 Year 9 pupils.
Cost
There is no cost attached to the event, but schools must arrange their own transport to the Cathedral and pupils and staff must bring a packed lunch. Further details will be provided once places have been allocated.
How do I sign up?
Please complete the details on the sign-up form by 25 September but we reserve the right to close submissions earlier if we reach capacity. Schools need to upload a letter from a member of their school’s senior leadership team which confirms permission to bring pupils to the event. Please note that signing up does not guarantee a place but please only do so if you are committed to attending as we are expecting lots of interest! Schools who have a place will be notified by 2 October
