This Arts Easter ResidentialLink opens in a new window took place from the 20th to 22nd April. It was a fantastic event with 17 students who identified as being autistic, spending three days and two nights experiencing university life, with many being away from home for the first time.

They took part in academic taster sessions, life skills workshops, shopping, cooking and a mini group project. Many of the young people spoke about their renewed confidence as they look to move from school to a more independent future.

On 27 April 2022, the University of Warwick hosted a joint event between the Widening Participation staff and Student Networks around the theme of 'Sense of Belonging'. The event was open to all staff and students at the university. There was a chance to highlight the support, opportunities and challenges faced by staff and students who study and work at the university. The event included interactive workshops, insight presentations and discussion forums.

Staff and students from across the Faculty of Arts were involved in presenting, and attending the event. Sessions included 'Young Carers’, 'Commuter Student', and also the 'Mature Student Experience'.

New scientific analysis of the composition of Roman denarii has brought fresh understanding to a financial crisis mentioned by Roman statesman and writer, Marcus Tullius Cicero, in his essay on moral leadership, De Officiis.

In the final episode of the #FacultyofArtsatHome series, Professor Stéphanie Panichelli-Batalla gets us thinking about health and its delivery from a global perspective, by sharing her research on the Cuban Internationalist Solidarity Programme.

The Faculty of Arts welcomed over seventy school students from across Coventry and Warwickshire to its new facilities last week. Over two days the Year 12 students from Caludon Castle, Cardinal Newman and Solihull Sixth Form spent time in the new FAB building. They had taster sessions ran by academic staff, tours of the Arts Centre, Q & A ambassador session as well as time to hear from alumni. The local students also entered a creative competition where they took pictures of the new building.

Students from Film and TV, History, and the School of Modern Languages have started to support a new and exciting programme to help Widening Participation students in our local area. From late February to mid-May student’s from the Faculty of Arts will be providing weekly academic support mentoring in schools across Coventry and Warwickshire. Over a 100 school children will be supported with their GCSE and A Levels, alongside their homework and information about university. The small group mentoring will then culminate in a celebratory visit to campus for all the mentees.

Announcing the launch of our Social Mobility Research Hub on Thursday 24^th February at 12pm to discuss an opportunity to run an exciting research project with a stipend worth over £1000.

There are twenty paid opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students from widening participation (WP) backgrounds to propose, plan and then carry out a research project over several months in areas related to WP, social mobility, inequality, diversity and/or inclusion. These projects may be carried out independently, in pairs, or as small groups. As part of the research process you will have access to a postgraduate mentor, who will offer advice, guidance and support on a regular basis. They will help supervise your project from the planning phase through to completion.

The Widening Participation team and the Faculty of Arts have been awarded over £26,000 by the Research England Enhancing Research Culture Fund to create a Social Mobility Student Research Hub over the next six months. The principal aim of the project is to create a Hub to improve access to, and participation in, research, for students from currently underrepresented groups, including those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, care leavers, and refugees.

To achieve this aim, the project will fund up to twenty students from underrepresented backgrounds to design research projects exploring issues around social mobility, Widening Participation (WP), diversity and inclusion. Undergraduate and postgraduate taught students will be given the opportunity to design these research projects in groups or as individuals, supported by postgraduate research students who will be recruited to act as mentors.

There are 3 autumn 2021 in person Open Days for prospective students to come and visit the University of Warwick campus: 9 October, 23 October and 6 November. The 6 November is particularly focused on the Arts and Humanities, but if you cannot make the 6th you are very welcome to come on the other dates. Our new Arts building (FAB) is reaching completion and we hope to be able to offer tours on the 6th November.

We will have staff and students from our Arts departments available to answer questions at the Information Fairs on the 9th and 23rd October. On the 6th November we are planning a mixture of subject-based drop-ins, workshops and presentations.

Virtual Open Days with academic presentations about the courses are being held in the week 25-29 October 2021.
