Subject or Area-Based Funding Opportunities

  • The David Bates, Alwyn Ruddock, and IHR Friends' Bursaries the aim of the bursaries is to enable students to undertake research at the IHR and at other London-based archives. Bursary is mainly for travel, accommodation and/or research expenses (Research students only). Amount awarded: Up to £500.
  • The British Federation of Women Graduates (BFWG): awards scholarships annually to women studying for doctorates at British universities. The awards are given on the basis of overall academic excellence determined from information given on application forms, in referee reports and, for shortlisted candidates, at interview. Deadlines are typically around February each year.

  • The Bibliographical Society Various awards and fellowships for research within the field of the bibliographical or book-historical study.
  • Catholic Record Society Several awards to support the study of British Catholic History.
  • Sir Julian Corbett prize in modern naval history - this rewards original research in the field of modern naval history, including the period from the end of the fifth century AD to the present day. Award amount, £1,000. Closing date is circa November each year.
  • The Currier's Company London History Essay Prize. The Worshipful Company of Curriers, one of the livery companies of the City of London, has established an essay prize on the history of London, in association with The London Journal Trust and the Institute of Historical Research.

  • Royal Historical Society, PG research support grants and prizes. Funds are available to subsidise attendance at conferences and training courses, and to help defray the costs of archival visits. In addition, bursaries are available to help those organising conferences to provide subsidised rates for postgraduate attendees
  • Il Circolo - Italian Cultural Association offers grants to undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers to pursue their studies in a relevant area.
  • Economic History Society will consider applications for grants – normally of up to £500 – to assist postgraduate students (Master's Degree and PhD) in United Kingdom colleges and universities with travel and subsistence expenses incurred in the undertaking of research into any aspect of economic and social history. Please note that no award will be made for the purchase of equipment, books and other materials or to fund conference attendance.
  • The Entente Cordiale scholarships - are prestigious awards that fund French students who wish to study in the UK, and British students who wish to study in France for one year or postgraduate level.

  • Society for the Study of French History - offers a range of grants and bursaries for postgraduate students in the UK, undertaking research in any aspect of French history:
  • Funds for Women Graduates - Foundation Grants for women graduates from UK and overseas, to help support the living expenses of one year's academic study or research.
  • Gladstone's Library Scholarships. Bursaries to help towards a short stay/visit and scholarships for a residential stay at the library.

  • The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation offers pre-doctoral grants for Venice-related research.
  • Huguenot Scholarship. This scholarship/award will be made to a student working for a higher degree (PhD) on a Huguenot subject, i.e. the study of any activity of the French, the Dutch, the Flemish or the Walloon Protestants from the 16th century to the present, in any geographical area. ‘Activity’ will be interpreted in the widest sense. Amount awarded, up to £4,000.
  • Lemmermann Foundation Scholarship Award offers scholarships in the classical studies and humanities to master's and doctoral students. Topic of research must be related to Rome and the Roman culture of any period, from the Pre-Roman period to the present day time. Applicants must: 1) be enrolled in a recognised University program; 2) have a basic knowledge of the Italian language.
  • The Malone Society; which publishes editions of sixteenth and early seventeenth-century plays from manuscript, photographic facsimile editions of printed and manuscript plays of the period, and editions of original documents relating to English theatre and drama before 1642, has instituted a research grants scheme to further original scholarship in these areas. Deadlines circa end of October each year.

  • Sir John Neale Prize in Early Modern British History. The Neale Prize is awarded annually to a historian in the early stages of his or her career. Entries should take the form of essays of no more than 8,000 words (including footnotes) on a theme related to the history of early modern Britain.

  • The Annual Pollard Prize (supported by Oxford University Press) awarded annually for the best paper presented at an Institute of Historical Research seminar by a postgraduate student or by a researcher within one year of completing the PhD.
  • The Reid Trust. Founded in 1868 in connection with Bedford College for Women for the promotion and improvement of women’s education.

    Each year the Reid Trust makes six to ten awards of between £250-£1500 each, to women who wish to undertake further training or research in the United Kingdom.

  • The Royal Institute of Philosophy has bursaries for current PhD students of up to £3,000 each and one-year studentships of £8,000 each.
  • Society of Antiquaries of London; The Society administers a number of different research funds, some of which are dedicated to specific areas of interest.
  • The Society for Theatre Research ; awards made annually of sums ranging from £200 to £1,000, as contributions to the cost of research which is substantially concerned with the history and practice of the British theatre
  • The Spalding Trust Research awards and travel grants for projects with an interfaith component.
  • Theodora Bosanquet Bursary; applications for the Bursary are invited annually circa end October. It is open to WOMEN scholars or WOMEN postgraduate students who are carrying out research in history or English literature requiring the use of libraries, archives, or other scholarly resources in London, and covers the cost of accommodation at a hall of residence in Central London for a period of up to four weeks. Other grants also available.
  • Vegetarian Charity Grants for people up to the age of 25 in financial need who are vegetarian or vegan. Students can apply for one-off and recurrent grants for specific courses or projects ranging from £100 to £500.
