Timelines

See the Elizabethans and Jacobeans in context

The section contains information about the period 1558-1637. This database has been designed and organised as a chronological list of events in England, Europe and beyond. It tells you about what was happening at the time in religion, politics, social life, literature, theatre and culture. The database has been compiled to provide the context for understanding the Elizabethans and Jacobeans and their work.

The database, which contains over 450 entries and sub-entries at present, is provided with a set of filters for interactive search. The filters can be used:

  1. to single out entries on particular topics of interest (e.g. "Life of Kyd", "Science", or "Disasters")
  2. to cumulate entries (e.g. "Theatre", "Literature and culture" and "Education", or any combination of the 20 available filters).
