Option Module: Culture and Social Innovation

This module offers you the opportunity to apply your theoretical and strategic knowledge by working as a member of a project team in response to a 'real world' problem in Development.

During the module you will consider the relationship between knowledge, research and problem solving. You will engage in creative thinking, strategic planning and project management. The aim is to develop professional skills in negotiating and navigating socially complex situations – and changing the world, or at least some part of it. The practice module therefore serves to introduce you to the more technical, and communication-based aspects of setting up and running a development project. How do we generate creative ideas and solutions to development problems? How we plan and schedule a course of action? How do we understand legitimacy, accountability and transparency – the democratic politics of development project management? How do we manage people creatively? How do we engage with the community, participants, stakeholders, and play a role in a local economy? How do we negotiate with the gatekeepers and powerful actors that govern that space? What if conflict breaks out?

This is one of the ‘practice’ oriented summer modules. It is part of the MA in Arts Enterprise and Development which means that it looks at the power of arts and culture to generate social and economic development. And development is defined within EU and UN contexts in terms of cultural policies for sustainability, rights, diversity and democracy. The module will be based in the city of Coventry, so will offer you a chance to test out development techniques on live social situations.

The AIMS of this module are
(i) To develop professional skills in development project design, planning and management;
(ii) To develop professional skills in Research and strategy making for a real organisation;
(iii) To participate and generate in City-based cultural action.

The emphasis of the module – as the title suggests – is on CULTURE having SOCIAL impact through innovation or innovative forms of development, which is another way of saying that standard forms of development (for community groups, institutions or places) has been based on normative models, and not engaged research, problem-solving, risk-taking, responses to new or emerging or future conditions.
