Woman’s Film and Female Subjectivity in Japanese and Korean Cinema in the 1920s and 30s

This study aims to re-examine the genre of woman’s film (女性映画) from the viewpoint of female subjectivity. I suggested in my PhD thesis a possibility to read the genre as a gender-specific discourse, where female audiences were allowed for an ideological space for their own perspective in opposition to patriarchy. In order to further develop this argument, this project will supplement more concrete evidences from Japanese female audience research and expand the boundary of scope to other directors' work than Ozu and the case in Korean cinema.
