Subject: Your start date for Term 2

Dear Liberal Arts students,

Following the email from the University sent to you on Thursday 3 December 2020, we would like to provide further guidance on our plans for the start of Term 2 in the Liberal Arts Department. This guidance is only applicable to students in Liberal Arts and modules taught in the Liberal Arts Department. If you are taking any modules in a department outside of Liberal Arts, you will need to check with the department delivering the module on the arrangements for study next term.

Return dates

The government has issued guidelines on students returning to higher education for the spring term. In line with the Government’s staggered start dates, if you are planning to arrive on campus for blended teaching in Term 2, we will be arranging your safe return as follows:

  • Week beginning 25 January 2021 (Week 3): Our standard blended teaching model (including face to face teaching) will start for first-year Liberal Arts students. Therefore, the first two weeks of teaching for Term 2 will be online only for first-year Liberal Arts students.
  • Week beginning 1 February 2021 (Week 4): Our standard blended teaching model (including face to face teaching) will start for second, third, and final-year Liberal Arts students. Therefore, the first three weeks of Term 2 will be online only for second, third, and final-year Liberal Arts students.

Online learning

Teaching in the Liberal Arts Department, prior to the start date for blended teaching (either Week 3 or Week 4 depending upon your year of study), will be delivered online as follows:

  • If you are studying a module with a lecture component, the lectures will be asynchronous and pre-recorded, with slides and recordings made available on Moodle.
  • Seminars will be designed for as much online interactivity as possible.
  • Teaching will continue to be supported through a range of online platforms, such as Microsoft Teams, Moodle and Talis Aspire reading lists, essay writing guides, and a whole host of other supporting materials.
  • We will continue to keep in touch with you via our weekly departmental emails and the Liberal Arts virtual common room.
  • Your personal tutor will be available for online meetings to support you. Please email them to book appointments for meetings via Teams.

Arriving back on campus for your start date

To ensure your safety, and that of our wider community, we are again strongly recommending that you take asymptomatic Covid-19 Lateral Flow Tests, this time as a prerequisite before re-starting face-to-face teaching. Hopefully, if you’ve already taken tests in the lead-up to the Christmas student travel window, you’re already aware of how safe and simple it is to do - if you’re one of the thousands who made the trip to the NHS Test and Trace centre based at The Slate, thank you.

From 5 January 2021, The Slate will again play host to the NHS Test and Trace service. Over the Christmas and New Year break, please look out for notifications on MyWarwick, or check your Warwick email account, for information on how to book.

Next steps

If you have requested to study online for the entirety of Term 2, we will be in touch with you separately to confirm arrangements.

We understand there’s a lot of information for you to keep on top of. That’s why we’ll do everything we can to keep you updated, and you should keep a close eye on your Warwick email account and MyWarwick during the Christmas break. We’d like to remind you of the University’s Christmas vacation provision if you’re staying on campus or locally, which you’ll be able to find on MyWarwick, and ideas of the Warwick Presents programme of activity in Term 2.
