Routes & Pathways

Design your degree.

There are two different ways to pursue your interests in Liberal Arts:
a disciplinary route or an specialist interest pathway.

Disciplinary Route

If your passions lie in a particular subject and you would like this to be recognised on your degree, a disciplinary route may be the best option for you.

On a disciplinary route, at least 25% of your modules will be in your chosen subject area of one of our partner departments.

Your degree title will recognise your chosen route, for example: "BA (Hons.) Liberal Arts With Economics".

Find out more about disciplinary routes.

Specialist Interest Pathway

If you're passionate about pursing a particular topic or theme across different subject areas, a specialist interest pathway may be the best option for you.

On a pathway, you design your own combination of optional modules from across the University.

Your pathway title will be recognised on your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR). Your degree title will be "BA (Hons.) Liberal Arts".

Disciplinary Routes

Partner Departments

There are 13 disciplinary routes available to study in Liberal Arts: click on your chosen subject to find out more about the modules that you'll study on your route.

Programme Structure

On a disciplinary route, you'll study a combination of modules in Liberal Arts, your chosen route subject area, and free choice modules.

You can find out more about the organisation of modules in disciplinary routes for different years of the programme in the tabs below.

Specialist Interest Pathways

Pathway Titles

Your pathway title should reflect the topics, themes, and approaches that you have explored across your degree.

Working with your personal tutor, you'll be asked to create a working title for your pathway at the end of your first year of study.

This working title can be refined and updated as you progress throughout your degree, and will be finalised ahead of graduation in Final Year.

Previous pathway titles include:

  • Advertisting, Gender, and Cultural Criticism
  • Apocalyptic Studies
  • Black British Studies
  • Business Ethics
  • Critical Sports Studies
  • Health and Human Society
  • Imagination and Childhood Development
  • Social Justice

Programme Structure

On an specialist interest pathway route, you'll study a combination of modules in Liberal Arts and free choice modules from across the University related to your pathway.

You can find out more about the organisation of modules in pathways for different years of the programme in the tabs below.
