Hello, this is just a brief video about why you might be interested in taking the Philosophy Pathway of your Liberal Arts degree. My name is Christoph Hoerl and I'm the Director of Education for Philosophy

First of all, what's involved in taking the Philosophy Pathway? Well, in your first year taking the Philosophy Pathway means that in addition to your Liberal Arts modules, you'll take a module called 'Introduction to Philosophy' from the Philosophy Department, and what that does is really give you a broad introduction into different areas of philosophy, areas such as Moral and Political Philosophy, areas such as Epistemology, the study of knowledge and Metaphysics, the study of the nature of reality and also Aesthetics, for instance, a study of the nature of art and beauty. But then after your first year, in your second and third year, it's completely up to you which Philosophy modules you choose alongside your Liberal Arts degree ones.

Why do you want to take the Philosophy Pathway? Well I think Philosophy tries to foster many of the skills that are at the heart of your Liberal Arts education. So for instance it involves analysing complex problems and thinking of how they might be approached in a new way. It involves probing the nature of knowledge and the limits of what we can know. In Philosophy, you're always involved in evaluating different points of view and debating them and you're involved in questioning the status quo. Why do things have to be the way they are at the moment? And ultimately, you want to find principles that can guide or should guide our actions and decisions.

Just take a look at the sample of the kinds of modules that we offer. This is just a sample of the modules in Philosophy that are running at the moment. So, you see here that there are modules dedicated to Moral Philosophy, Ethics, modules in Aesthetics, about the nature of art and beauty. Warwick is quite well-known also for having a number of members of staff working in what's called Continental Philosophy, that involves studying thinkers as such as Sartre, Heidegger, Nietzsche, or Hegel, and we regularly offer modules covering those thinkers. We have modules in Moral and Political Philosophy such as Democracy and Authority and we also for instance have a module on Feminism. So you'll see here that there's a broad base of different modules that you can study and you can really if you want to specialise in one particular area of Philosophy.
