Extracts for 18 January
John Ruskin, Sesame and Lilies
Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White (novel)
Chapters 5, 6 & 7 – the first introduction to Marion Halcombe, Mr Fairlie and Laura Fairlie. These are the chapter numbers in the Penguin Classics edition edited by Julian Symons. If you are using a different edition, check that the first of these chapters begins ‘ When I rose the next morning . . .’ as in some editions the required chapters are numbered 6, 7 & 8.
You can download these from the internet for free. See http://collins.thefreelibrary.com/The-Woman-in-White/. However, in this version the selected chapters are 6, 7 & 8.
Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Lady Audley’s Secret (novel)
It would be extremely helpful to read this novel in its entirety, especially before we read The Yellow Wallpaper. For this week, read as much as you can but at the very least read the following two chapters:
Vol. 1 Chapter 1 ‘Lucy’ – in which we meet Lucy Graham.
Vol.1 Chapter 8 ‘Before the Storm’.
You can download these from the internet for free. See http://www.indiana.edu/~letrs/vwwp/braddon/lady1.html.
For all these readings, please consider constructions of gender.
Remember to bring all the extracts, downloads and texts to the seminar.
