Module Description

This module introduces and explores both the theory and practice of drama and theatre studies in an educational setting. A series of seminars explore key ideas in education, the curriculum and the specific pedagogies involved in teaching theatre studies and drama. A series of workshops run concurrently, led by practicing teachers these explore practical strategies and techniques to use whilst teaching.

Throughout the course of the module you will complete the equivalent of ten days placement in the Drama/Theatre Studies department of a secondary school. This will be arranged for you by the Centre for Education who will work with you to fit around your timetable. In school you will be assigned a subject specialist teacher to act as your mentor in school and help you engage with activities supporting teaching and learning in drama/theatre studies. This could include supporting lessons, working with small groups, leading an activity within a lesson, or potentially teach whole lessons. Following completion of the placement you will be provided with a professional reference.

The module is ideal for anybody with an interest in how ideas in theatre studies/drama can be taught or explained to another, or experiencing theatre studies/drama in a different environment. It is an excellent opportunity for anybody considering teaching or leading educational workshops as a career, or for those who would like to develop key transferable skills through experience a professional work placement.


  • Portfolio of tasks (2500 words) 40%, due end of Spring Term
  • Reflective Essay (1500 words) 40%, due middle of Summer Term
  • Academic Poster 20%, due late Summer Term


Weekly 2-hour seminar and 2-hour workshop in the Westwood Teaching Block, Spring term weeks 1-8. Plus school placement.
