Lisa Skwirblies

I am a Ph.D. candidate at the School for Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Warwick in my last year. I will be finishing my dissertation in September 2017. In my research I investigate the nexus of German colonialism and theatre at the turn of the 20th century. I am interested in the role theatre played (and plays) in the cultural processing of the colonial project. Moreover, I am exploring theatre's and especially theatricality's role in the production of a colonial order and meaning. Hence, rather than understanding theatre merely as a convenient medium that mediated the colonial project to a domestic audience or understanding the appearance of colonialism on German theatre stages simply as a commercially interesting motif for an 'exotic' stage setting, I argue for a deeper relation between the two; one that understands 'colonial theatricality' as a framing strategy that helped to make the colonies 'manageable' and hence exploitable in the first place. Methodologically, I draw from the fields of theatre historiography, performance studies, and (post-)colonial studies.

I hold an Magister Artium (M.A.) from the Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität of Munich in Theatre Studies, German Literature and Comparative Literature (with distinction), and an MA in International Performance Research from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Warwick (with distinction).
I enjoy teaching performance theory and seminars on dramaturgy at the Academy for Theatre in Dance in Amsterdam, and work as a freelance dramaturg between Amsterdam and Berlin.
