TH313 Staging Shakespeare from 1960 to the Present

This course studies recent productions of Shakespeare’s plays both in this country and abroad. Emphasis is placed on a close analysis of eight to ten plays and on the ways in which our understanding and interpretation of those plays is formed by specific performances. This year a number of the plays will be concerned with history.
The course focuses on the work of directors, designers and theatre companies who have made a significant contribution to the staging of Shakespeare’s work, taking into account trends in theatrical practice as well as the social and cultural circumstances in which individual productions were devised and presented.
Work falls into three broad areas: the study of major British productions since 1960, the study of Shakespeare’s plays in a small number of productions from other social and cultural contexts and the analysis of current productions.
Students are encouraged to use a range of archival material, including slides, photographs and video recordings as well as production notes and reviews in newspapers, journals and periodicals, to compile the evidence on which to base a detailed analysis of productions.
The course is taught by means of one seminar of two hours per week, for which students may be required to prepare short papers or to view material in advance.
There will be one or two theatre visits. These form an integral part of the course and attendance on these visits is required.
Assessment is by two essays and an examination.
