Millburn Research Seminar - John Wyver - Screening the RSC: thoughts on researching the company's 107-year adaptation history
The earliest screen adaptation to be shot from the Stratford stage was a 22-minute film of Frank Benson's production of Richard III. The most recent was Coriolanus presented by RSC Live from Stratford-upon-Avon in October. Between these two an extraordinarily rich adaptation history embraces feature films, television presentations, documentaries and recordings for education, marketing and other purposes, some of it of full productions, some of only fragments. And tantalisingly there are some screen versions known to have been made but of which no copies can now be found (including a University of Warwick recording of Buzz Goodbody's The Other Place production of King Lear). Yet with only a few notable exceptions, such as Peter Brook's feature films and the recent "event cinema" broadcasts, these film and television translations have attracted little scholarly attention. This seminar explores aspects of my current research for a book about the RSC on screen and proposes why it may be productive to consider a company's adaptation history across more than a century.
John Wyver is a writer and producer with the independent media production company Illuminations. He is Director, Screen Productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Principal Research Fellow in the School of Media, Arts and Design at the University of Westminster. For the RSC he produces the RSC Live from Stratford-upon-Avon "event cinema" broadcasts and in 2016 he oversaw the television and cinema presentation to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, Shakespeare Live! From the RSC. His productions have been honoured with a BAFTA, an International Emmy and a Peabody Award. His book The RSC on Screen will be published as part of The Arden Shakespeare series in 2018.

The evening offers a chance for TPS students to chat with those who have gone before them, and hear something about moving from university into the world of work, developing a career in the performing arts, creative industries and further afield, and get some advice about ways forward. We’ll start with the alumni giving a brief introduction to say who they are and what they do, and then it’s over to general mingling and discussion over a glass of wine and some nibbles. The evening has proven to be a great success and much appreciated by students in the past. It’s a great way of networking, and clarifying your thoughts about next steps. We’ve put a lot of time and funding into this, and have a great line-up of alumni:
Maria works internationally as a director, performer and teacher. She is artistic director of Superbolt Theatre, a multi-award winning collaborative theatre company that tours around the globe performing original work to audiences of diverse backgrounds and ages. She trained for two years at Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School and has a first class degree in Theatre and Performance Studies from University of Warwick. Maria is also director of School of Fish Theatre in Education Company which runs theatre courses in Italy. Additionally, she works with the Clod Ensemble on their Performing Medicine programme, which uses the arts provide training to healthcare professionals. Maria been a visiting lecturer on the Theatre and Performance Practice course at London Metropolitan University and is currently studying a part time Masters in International Politics at SOAS University in London.
Alecky is a playwright and actor. She studied theatre at the University of Warwick and trained at Mountview Academy. She won a Time Out Award for her first play, Come Out Eli, and was selected as one of Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow in 2007. In 2003, Alecky set up Recorded Delivery (Verbatim Theatre Company). The term 'recorded delivery' has now become synonymous with the verbatim technique she employs.
Alice graduated in 2017 and is an Award Winning Producer whose achievements span from the Almeida Theatre in London to projects supported by National Lottery Funding and Arts Council England. Her work has identified her as a Woman in the Arts Next Generation Leader featured in The Guardian, Huffington Post, The Stage and Oberon Books. On being selected for this recognition she is grateful to be mentored by top UK Arts and Cultural Leaders including Vicky Featherstone (Artistic Director of the Royal Court), Jude Kelly (Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre and Women Of the World Festival), Kate Rowland (Head of BBC Radio Drama and BBC Creative Director of New Writing), Tanya Seghatchian (Producer of Harry Potter and The Crown), Caroline Cooper Charles (Senior Executive and Producer at Creative England) and Tamara Rojo (Director of the English National Ballet). The program is also run in partnership with Writers at Work Productions, The Women of the Future Program and Central Saint Martins.
Ellie is a postdoctoral researcher and theatre-maker. Her doctoral research at Warwick traced the re-emergence of an early language of storytelling in modern theatre, and experimented with actor training methodologies. Ellie has worked with the National Trust to create several immersive medieval and Elizabethan festivals, and has previously directed shows at the Tristan Bates Theatre, the Minack, the Albany Theatre, Exeter Northcott and other venues. Last year she produced the world premiere of new play Hashtag Lightie for the Arcola Theatre with Team Angelica. Currently Ellie is a resident artist at the Watershed Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol (since 2016) and Theatre Delicatessen in London (since 2015), where she creates immersive theatrical experiences utilising multi-sensory technologies with her company Sleight of Hand (www.sleightofhandtheatre.co.uk). Her current project, Ergo Sum, explores neurodiversity and mental health through a combination of physical theatre, projection mapping and binaural “3D” sound.
Max leads C&T’s programme of community projects and works across C&T’s international collaborations. Working alongside Dr Paul Sutton to research, develop and deliver C&T’s projects all over the world. Max brings knowledge of gaming and video editing to the unique fusion of drama and digital technology C&T prides itself upon. Max is responsible for C&T’s work with Learning and Physically Disabled adults, creating and leading projects with Mencap and Oxfam that have been staged at theatres in London, attended by Members of Parliament, Charity CEO’s and the Culture Secretary. Max is also heavily involved with C&T’s international work, using his knowledge of volunteering in Gambia to develop C&T’s first collaboration in Africa.
Natalie is a theatre director & academic based in Manchester. As a director, I have a large number of productions under my belt including His Dark Materials and Spring Awakening the Musical (Royal & Derngate), My Brother’s Country (The Lowry, ARC, Theatre in the Mill), The Believers Are But Brothers (Ovalhouse, Shepherd’s Bush Theatre), B!RTH (Royal Exchange Theatre) and Thesmo (West Yorkshire Playhouse, Theatre in the Mill, Square Chapel). Natalie is currently working on an adaptation of The Assembly Women by Aristophanes, which will be performed at Theatre in the Mill later this year.
Judith graduated from Warwick’s BA in Theatre and Performance Studies in 2012 and joined the cultural sector’s museum industry, working for the Science Museum. After several wonderful years helping to deliver the Museum’s new national and international strategies, Judith returned to university in 2015 to complete her MSc in Global Management at the London School of Economics with an exchange term on the MBA at Cornell University. She graduated in 2017 and now works in External Relations at Shell as an Editor for the Global Editorial team where she writes speeches and op-eds for the organisation as well as creating articles and short films for Shell’s digital publication, Inside Energy. In January 2018 Inside Energy won the Digiday Europe award for the best branded content publication in print or digital.
Since graduating from Warwick in 2012, Holly has enjoyed a variety of roles within the creative industries, including being the Education Programmes Coordinator at The Royal Shakespeare Company for four years. Having always been passionate about theatre for young people, she has also worked as a freelance workshop practitioner, a Courses Manager for the National Youth Theatre and was on the board of Trustees for IdeasTap, a charity providing funding and opportunities for 16-25 year olds, Since having her first child, she also writes a parenting blog which has a focus on culture and works with cultural venues in the West Midlands to help promote and review family and children's theatre.
Jack is a Radio producer on BBC Radio 3, 6 Music and the World Service. Executive producer on Serpentine Galleries podcast and Serpentine Marathon. Recent sound art/audio drama work for the Old Vic Theatre and Hordaland Kuntsenter (Bergen).
As co-artistic director of FellSwoop Theatre in Bristol, I have worked with several international artists including BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Sylvain Chomet (film director - France) and Man Booker Prize nominee Patrick DeWitt (author – Canada). I have participated to numerous national and international festivals including the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence (France), Frinje Madrid (Spain) and the Edinburgh Fringe (UK) where the company won the NSDF award for Best Emerging Company 2011 and was shortlisted for the Peter Brook Award 2015.
Orla is Artistic Director and Joint Chief Executive of the Traverse Theatre. Prior to this she was Artistic Director of Pentabus Theatre and Associate Director (International) at the Royal Court. Over the course of her career she has directed an eclectic mix of award-winning and internationally acclaimed new work at a range of arts venues, festivals and non-conventional theatre-spaces.
Susie is a writer and theatre maker based in the West Midlands. After graduating from Warwick she wrote and performed I’m Not Like Other Girls at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014 with funding from Lord Rootes Memorial Fund, followed by the inaugural Shoot Festival in Coventry, before later returning to Warwick to perform for students studying the Performance of Gender.
Kate is Head of Audience Insights & Research at the Southbank Centre, London.
‘I started my career in marketing, working my way up from assistant to officer at a range of producing and presenting venues including Theatre Royal and Concert Hall Nottingham, LG Arena, Town Hall Symphony Hall Birmingham, and Curve theatre. My interest in audiences led to a role as Audience Insight Manager before taking on the position I have now. I am fortunate to have a job I am truly passionate about and would be delighted to talk to anyone with any questions about working in marketing, audience insight, producing and presenting theatres or even just how to get started.’
