History, Memory, Event and the politics of Performance

INVITATION AND PROGRAMME FOR THE PUBLIC EVENT:
During the week of November 8th, staff from the School of Art and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi) and staff from the School of Theatre, Performance, and Cultural Policy Studies, (Warwick), will hold discussions concerning an archive of materials they have jointly constructed concerning the years 1970-1990, mapping the politics of performance in India and selected sites in the West, showing the connections and the developments that flow between/against India and the European-American-world scenario, choosing some landmark performances for close analysis as exemplars. Building on previous discussions held in Delhi last March, this dialogue will develop such themes as codifying the political within the body, the crisis of complex temporalities in cultural negotiation, and the process by which narratives about the nation enter into representation, and thus into collective memory.

Thursday 11 November will offer an open public programme that will highlight several aspects of this collaboration, and also report on several other collaborations between University of Warwick and JNU scholars. The programme for the afternoon also includes the book launch of two volumes by JNU and Warwick scholars and a keynote on the relationship between film and theatre through documentary by Warwick film studies Professor Stella Bruzzi. The programme will take place in Millburn House, Film Studies AO28.
