Is APP TE for me?

The APP TE programme has been designed for academic staff who have recently joined the University of Warwick, and who are required to gain Fellowship of the HEA to meet the conditions of their probation.

APP TE presents a comprehensive introduction to being a teaching academic at the University of Warwick. The course will help you to develop your day-to-day teaching practice, but also your ability to design modules and assessment strategies, evaluate your teaching, and provide feedback to learners; and it gives you the opportunity to develop your understanding of the university context, and issues affecting the whole sector. The course is also a key opportunity to make connections outside your department, and see what teaching and learning looks like in other disciplines.

Most importantly, APP TE will help you to adopt a reflective and scholarly approach to teaching which will enable you to continually improve your teaching practice, throughout your career.

Read on for information about whether APP TE is a probation requirement for you, the eligibility conditions for the course, and partial exemptions for staff who already have FHEA or extensive teaching experience. Or, for further information about the course content and assessment, click here.

Probation requirements

Your appointment letter should tell you whether or not you are required to complete APP TE. Under normal circumstances, if you are an Assistant Professor on a research and teaching contract, then you will need to complete APP TE. If you are not on a research and teaching contract, you may still be asked to complete APP TE by your Head of Department.

If you are not required to complete APP TE as part of your probation but would still like to join the course, please contact us at appte@warwick.ac.uk.

New staff must begin the programme within eight months of their appointment. If you are unable to begin the programme within eight months of your appointment please contact us as soon as possible via email at APPTE@warwick.ac.uk.

Eligibility

The programme is practice-based. Participants will need to be actively teaching during their time on the course.

You will need to have at least 30 hours of teaching and related activities scheduled during your time on the course. As well as time in the classroom, this includes research supervision; designing learning activities, resources and modules; assessing and providing feedback on student work; providing individual student support including office hour time; guest lectures to learners (i.e., not research seminars or similar); leading tutorials, seminars, laboratories etc. We also include time spent planning and preparing to teach.

If you less than 30 hours of teaching and related activities during your 12 months on the programme, please contact us as soon as possible via APPTE@warwick.ac.uk, and we can discuss the options available to you.

Partial exemption

Staff who already have FHEA are only required to complete Part 1 of the programme, comprising a one-day workshop and a two-day workshop; some blended learning through the Moodle VLE; and a structured peer dialogue. If you already have FHEA but APP TE is a probationary requirement for you, then you will be contacted about a Partial Exemption shortly before the first workshop.

Partial Exemption may also be granted to staff on the basis of experience and professional development. Staff who have 3+ years' experience of the full range of teaching responsibilities in HE, as set out in the Professional Standards Framework (2011), and of engaging with teaching-related CPD and literature, may apply for Partial Exemption.

To gain the Partial Exemption on the basis of experience, staff will need to demonstrate that they can meet the intended learning outcomes of APP TE without the support of the full taught programme. They do this by completing an application form in which they are asked to create a reflective account of their teaching practice, which addresses each of the programme learning outcomes. If successful, they will then be transferred onto the experiential pathway (APP EXP) to complete their application for FHEA. If you think you will be eligible for a partial exemption on the basis of experience, please contact the programme team at appte@warwick.ac.uk.

Please note that the requirement to complete APP TE and the requirement to get FHEA are separate; there are elements of the APP TE programme which must be completed, even by staff who have FHEA already.

Probationary requirements are approved by the University Senate, and not within our power to waive.
