Examples of Focus Groups

Skills Training for Researchers

Focus groups were used by the Centre for Academic Practice to gather researchers’ views and suggestions for the format and implementation of a framework and programme of skills training, to be funded from Roberts’ money.  Initially a structured sample of Research Grade 1A Research Council-funded researchers (the target group for the training) was invited to the focus groups.  Unfortunately, this approach did not produce enough willing participants and so we used our departmental CRS Reps. structure to try and set up departmental focus groups.  In the end we ran 7 focus groups with 40 participants in all.  They produced invaluable data which will help us to design a framework and programme where skills training can be provided at an appropriate level and delivered in an appropriate format.  A copy of the schedule that we used for the focus groups is available word | pdf.
