The Use of Firewalls in an Academic Environment

Currently there are over 90 different commercial firewall solutions available,  one purpose of this report to provide a framework and methodology for evaluating the available solutions. The report also explores the technical and social issues of deploying a ' Default deny' firewall/security strategy.

Human Factors Aspects of Virtual Design Environments in Education

This project has concentrated on the human factors issues of interactive virtual design environments. As more and more use is made of 3D design systems (covering CAD and Virtual Design Environments) in higher education establishments there has been an urgent need to understand the complex human-computer aspects of these systems. Apart from the human factors in the use of these tools there is a requirement to understand the implications that may arise when these systems are used in teaching or educational contexts. The results from the study will be extremely important to anyone intending to use these systems for supporting education.

Innovative use of data Networks to Improve Campus Security

This report considers three main aspects of security. It looks at legal and social aspects of deploying a CCTV security system. It investigates a number of commercial systems for CCTV over a variety of media including data networks, and explores the deployment and effectiveness of such systems. Thirdly, avenues for a more "complete" security system are explored.

Delivering Staff and Professional Development

The TALiSMAN (Teaching And Learning in Scottish Metropolitan Area Networks) project has employed several alternative strategies to deliver staff development. This report draws on their experience in  delivering staff development face-to-face and online, and will examine some of the key factors for successful online delivery of staff and professional development. The report also assess a number of special software solutions (termed Virtual Learning Environments or VLEs) which can be used to support the learning process in the context of professional development.
