Use of LotusNotes at Lancaster: an Overview

This paper illustrates, through the use of case descriptions, how Lotus Notes software is being used to support asynchronous collaboration and information sharing among staff and students at Lancaster University. Asynchronous collaboration has a key role in supporting teaching, learning and research. Geographically diverse groups can interact in a way that would otherwise be costly in terms of travel or communications costs. Similarly, more flexible working patterns and a more considered/reflective dialogue can be supported due to the time independent nature of such interaction. Information sharing, in particular through Notes/Web integration is described. The support issues raised for central support staff are highlighted. Some future developments are outlined.
