The Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence enable members of the Warwick community to recognise a member of the University's staff who have made a difference in learning and teaching.

All staff who teach or support student learning at Warwick are eligible to be nominated for an Award. Nominees can be part-time, non-permanent, or sessional members of staff, including visiting academics and postdocs. Those who do not have traditional teaching responsibilities are encouraged to place the emphasis on opportunities in their role to engage with the criteria of the awards.
Colleagues may only accept a nomination for either WATE or WAPTE. If a colleague is nominated for both they will have to choose which awards scheme through which they wish to progress.
Nominations should address the following criteria:
Criterion 1: Enhancing and transforming the student learning experience
- Stimulating students' curiosity and interest in ways that inspire a commitment to learning and enhance their learning experience
- Imaginative use of resources
- Recognising and actively supporting the full diversity of student learning needs
Criterion 2: Supporting colleagues and influencing support for student learning
- Demonstrating impact and engagement beyond the nominee's immediate academic or professional role
- Contributing to the development of colleagues
- Contributing to wider initiatives to facilitate student learning
The Awards operate in two stages:
Stage One (Nominations)
- Nominations may be submitted by both students and staff, following the awards criteria and guidance provided on each set of forms.
- Ensure that the relevant people have signed the nomination form if required to do so.
- Return the form via email (wate at warwick dot ac dot uk).
- Nominations will be reviewed by the head of the nominee's department prior to evaluation by the panel of judges.
- A panel of judges drawn from across the University and traditionally chaired by Professor Christopher Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), evaluates all stage one nominations and produces a shortlist of up to 10 nominees to proceed to stage two. All nominees will be contacted at this point to be informed of the outcome.
Stage Two (Shortlist)
- Shortlisted nominees will be invited to participate in stage two. Colleagues who are shortlisted can withdraw at this point for any reason. Once they confirm they are happy to be shortlisted, colleagues will be expected to submit a Finalist Supporting Statement and participate in the public recognition and follow up that will be conducted in partnership with Winners and Commendees.
- All individuals shortlisted will be asked to complete and submit a Finalist Supporting Statement. Any shortlisted colleague who does not submit a Finalist Supporting Statement by the stated deadline will be removed from the judging process and the next eligible candidate will be asked to join.
- Shortlisted nominees will be asked to address a third criterion:
Criterion 3: Commitment to professional development with regard to teaching and learning (and/or learning support)
Continuous professional development
Developing teaching and learning through reviewing and enhancing individual practice
Making specific contributions to significant improvements in the student learning experience
- Finalist Supporting Statements should be no more than 3000 words and should address the awards criteria in more detail (noting the third criterion).
- Heads of Department will also need to provide a supporting statement of 500 to 750 words.
- All completed paperwork should be returned via email (wate at warwick dot ac dot uk).
Winners will be notified of the panel's decision, which is binding and final, and the announcements will be made on this website and through Insite.
The winners will be invited to attend the summer Degree Congregation to receive their awards. Commendees will receive their awards at a celebration reception held later in the year.
As part of our commitment to raising the profile of teaching excellence in the University, Winners and Commendees will be expected to disseminate their teaching activities more widely in collaboration with ADC. The format of this is flexible, for example: short video interviews, articles, presentations at University events (such as the Education Conference), facilitating workshops, etc. Any content generated may be added to the WATE webpages and used in other publicity materials.
Both University staff (all grades, all posts) and current students (foundation students, UG, PG) can nominate Warwick staff who meet the eligibility criteria. Staff and students are required to use different forms, as indicated on the WATE Nominations page. Please ensure that you are filling out the correct nomination form: current University staff must fill in the WATE Staff Nomination form and current students the WATE Student Nomination form. Incorrect forms may not be accepted.
Individuals can make more than one nomination and nominees can be nominated by more than one person. Self nominations are not accepted.
All nominations must be received by the closing date (tbc).
Any questions regarding the nomination process or the eligibility of potential nominees or nominators should be directed to wate at warwick dot ac dot uk prior to the closing date (tbc).
Late nominations will not be accepted.
The Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence process is chaired by Professor Christopher Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), and administered by the Academic Development Centre. WATE is supported by a selection panel comprised of individuals drawn from across the University. All decisions made through the process are final.
All nominations will be treated in strictest confidence and names of nominators will not be shared with nominees.
The Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence distributes the following award amounts by transferring budget to departments:
- Winners (up to five) receive £5,000 each
- Commendees (up to five) receive £2,000 each
Funds are provided directly to the Winner or Commendee's department (or substantive or 'home' department in the case of joint/cross appointments). Budget will be made available in the first quarter of the financial year following the award and must be spent by the end of that financial year.
Additionally, WATE Winners will receive their award certificates at a Degree Congregation, usually taking place in the July immediately following the announcement of the winners. Coordination of Winner participation in Degree Congregations is handled by the Awards and Ceremonies Team, which is separate from the Academic Development Centre.
Commendees will receive their certificates in a celebration reception.
Awards money may only be spent on supporting the development of the Winner or Commendee's teaching practice, in accordance with the University's financial regulations and procedures.
Please note that all equipment, etc., purchased using WATE funds remains the property of the University.
